I need the secret. I have a son, 9 years old, and there is only a handful of things he'll eat and it bugs me cause he's too skinny and not getting enough protein. His little brother, a year younger, is the complete opposite and will eat anything you put in front of him. I'd like the older one to be like that. I don't want to starve him though. I've thought about doing it but I can't.

The secret? I wish I knew cause I'd damn sure write a book about it if I did. Starving them is out of the question, and probably wouldn't work anyway with food around.

I know that children are easier to fool than adults...slip sustenance/new food in them through ruse and cunning using your powers of adult guile.

Beyond that...? Your guess is as good as mine.

I used to hide mashed potatoes in my half glass of milk to avoid eating them so I remembered that kids are sneaky too. My parents tried everything from raging threats of "eat it or wear it" to letting me fall asleep at my plate. None of that worked.

With my own kids I tried to make "unusual foods" a fun thing to do/cook/share as a family, like entertainment, whenever possible. And I tricked them when all else failed; from squirrel to squid, my kids tried it whether they knew it at the time or not. And we all laughed about it afterwards.

When they honestly tried something, and simply didn't like it, that was the end of that; no pressure.

Good luck to you; picky kids are a pain to their parents. I know I was.

He can't be fooled. It has to look and smell just as he expects. Definitely can't switch meats up on him cause he won't eat any meat. Back to plan A, my only plan really, wait for him to grow out of it.

Supplements? Would he do that at least?
Swallowing pills is not a favorite of his. I've tried vitamin enriched protein shakes and he'll drink a little and let the rest go to waste. He'll drink those smoothie drinks from the store but not at home where we could add something to it. Maybe need a better blender. Texture is a big thing with him too.

If worried about protein just make the shakes... will need a blender to get it right.
Mix in your milk and flavoed whey... won't hurt him... don't get any with too many suppliments as it's not cool at that age.
One a day should do it... single scoop, 130 cals but enough protein for that age.

Nuts are an even better choice really.... if you can get him into salted almonds or something...
Beans another...

I have a daughter who won't eat anything and a boy who eats everything...
She's not picky... just eats portions that make me wonder...
The boy on the other hand I slow down cause I don't want weigh to be an issue....
Not that being a little thick while growing isn't a problem as you will grow in height... but habbits can be bad and I know kids can be mean as hell...
kids... can't win... and can't stop trying.... lol

I understand, I'd try the "well that's what the UFC and other athletes do" trick, but it sounds like you've tried a little bit of everything. It would bother me as well, good luck!

What WILL he eat?

If he can eat eggs, you have a perfect 6 grams of protein per egg.

If he'll tolerate legumes and grains, try different combinations together. Red lentils and quinoa work pretty well together if you get some good spices in there to make a burrito filling and is a leader in protein yield for this combination. Less exotic and probably more palatable to the finicky eater would be black beans and brown rice.

Soybeans steamed and salted make a really good snack that's SUPER high in protein (On cup gets you over an ounce)

Cottage cheese is also very high - one cup yields an ounce.

Humans don't really require a lot of protein and in meat-poor societies these foods I've listed keep people healthy and strong.

I guess a little solace for you as far as the meat issue goes is that most of readily accessible grocery store meat in the USA is pretty terrible for your health, the environment and the animals that we source it from, and we as Americans eat way too much of it.

Good luck with your son, there's gotta be something out there that he can learn to enjoy. It's probably not horse though...

I was a picky eater when I was a kid and no way in hell would I have eaten soybeans or cottage cheese, I might try soybeans one day but I will never eat cottage cheese. So I doubt his kid will like either of those foods.

I still won't eat cottage cheese.

I couldn't stand that stuff as a kid... now I could eat an entire tub in one sitting.

My one kid is a pretty good eater. She doesn't like sweets, eats most everything and will at least try something once if she's not sure. The other kid won't touch anything unless it looks like candy or smells like bacon. She's living proof that a human can exist solely on milk, mac n' cheese, pickles, pot stickers and Slim-Jims.

Just because someone doesn't like cottage cheese doesn't mean they have a eating disorder. A lot of people don't like cottage cheese, but there are many people who do like it.

I like cottage cheese.

I travel around the world, so being picky with food is not an option. You never know, you try something with a weird smell, appearance, and name, then you're like.. WHOA, this shit is awesome.

What really makes me laugh, is when someone judges all of the sesame/chickpea foods, because they have these foreign names. I got news for them, tahini/humus is fucking awesome.

But whatever, the amount of kids-food that is still consumed as regular adult food for most people is Special person. Grown ass people who still have a bulk diet of pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken nuggets, mac'n'cheese. Seriously, YOLO. Try more food. And yeah, just because you like egg rolls and sweet and sour chicken =/= liking Chinese food.
