Am i the only one who not overly impressed right now with the cubs overall acquisitions ? Besides Lester nobody else really wows me or makes me glad we got them.

Hammels, montero, Lastella, motts, and ross arent exactly game changers and making me cant wait to see them play. .

Im sure their going to be looking into their trade offers now for Castillo, i just hope it brings in a decent needed bat for lineup

I will give them until starting day 2016 before I render judgment. If they don't have a WS competitor by then, then I'll tar and feather everyone involved.

I wasn't expecting WS type players added, just a couple guys that would fit in as long term players over veteran role players

Frankly, other than pitching there wasn't much in FA. As for trades, I would have liked to get Heyward but other than that and maybe Upton I'm not sure what else there was to do. Then again, i still feel like this offseason isn't all that important to begin with because this most of the players being signed will be passing prime by the time the current prospects are reaching their prime.

Its beginning to look more now like they just want to spend 2015 seeing what baez, Alcantara, soler, and eventually Bryant can do for a full season and will address where / if needed come next off season

By getting Lester, and Hammel to go with Arrieta and Hendricks. . Their hoping the pitching will take some pressure off those kids so where they dont feel the need to press offensively to score runs..

There will be a sweet spot (maybe 2-3 years) in which the current prospects turn into sold, producing players to complement our free agent signings/trade acquisitions. That will be the time the Cubs should win it all. In order for that to happen, the Cubs need to do more than sign David Ross. He doesn't really advance the cause.

I'm guessing with adding Ross Castillo is good as gone. I'm expecting Castillo and Wood traded soon.

They did more than sign David Ross. They acquired Montero, who will saved almost as many runs as Lester. I have read two different writers name that as the underrated move of the offseason. (I was more skeptical than that, but encouraged to see them say so.)

Forgive me if I am repeating something posted here. I believe I saw this elsewhere, and am sharing.

There is a rumor that the Padres are looking to send Wil Myers to Philly in a deal for Hamels. And to add to the intrigue, the Padres on line store has Kemp jerseys and Upton jerseys for sale, but no Myers.

OK, enough of this nonsense with James Shields.

No way do we want to offer anything that blocks a FA signing next offseason, as there are many options better than Shields,

But he isn't getting the offer he wants. Offer him a ONE year deal, and bump it enough over what he could get on average in a 4 year deal, add incentives, and sign him for 2015 only.

its doubtful he takes a 1 year deal. it is too risky for him. his best play is to get a contract lower than he wants but more money and longer term. he would be foolish to do 1 year. if he gets hurt he will never see anything close to what he will eventually sign for

Why would he do that? He'll be a year older and will get offered even less on a three year deal. In the end I think St. Louis sings him for 4/$75 million and the Cubs don't know enough about their own team to be in the business of blocking Cardinals moves just yet.

And if he did he'd do it for a team that's a playoff team

I know it's 100-1 against him takin a 1 year deal. He's not in "prove-it" mode after an injury, Just the opposite. His best way of maximizing the guaranteed money is to take as long a deal as he can get, concentrating on the contract total vs. the average, since he's not getting another big deal after this one.

I just was suggesting that if he's looking at 18 per year, throw 25 at him and offer him a chance to play for Maddon on a team that becomes a more serious contender if he joins. It could only happen if he gets frustrated with not getting what he thinks he's worth and takes the "**** it - I am going to try to contend for 2015" attitude.

He won't really sign a deal that short, and nothing longer than that works for the Cubs. They MUST leave themselves open for 2016 with the supply of pitchers available.
