The choice was 20 (or more) games or nothing. That's the way it was written into the rules book & cbe. It'll work out the same for Wideman regardless. If he was/is concussed, he'll need the time to recover. If not, he'll need the time to think about what he did. The only gray (matter) area is that he's suspended without pay...which is a HUGE punishment.

It is actually a minimum 10 games according to TSN referencing the leagues rule 40 (abuse of officials).

Sure Wideman could have missed 20 games due to injury/concussion, but I highly doubt it and don't think that is a good argument towards suspending him a certain amount. Especially since you brought up the fact that he will forfeit a large amount of pay - $500k+.

I saw them read the rule out loud as 20 games on NHL network. ??? And site previous 20 game suspensions. Who knows. But it's a good precedent, and I don't buy the concussion. He was angry at the official, he bumped him and extended in a bad impulse.

It wasn't that bad, but are you going to let the next guy who checks an official say he was concussed? You can't allow it, you can't reduce it. They are untouchable.

Impressive for Toronto to get out from under that contract without having to retain any salary. Shanahan doing some work out there.

Senators acquire defenceman Phaneuf from Maple Leafs in 9-player trade
https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/cp...-phaneuf-maple-leafs-nine-161846595--nhl.html

I like this deal for the Senators. People will rip on Phaneuf and maybe he doesn't have the best contract, but he is a pretty damn good dman. He's been in a crappy situation in Toronto and he should do real well in Ottawa. Could do real well playing a role next to Karlsson.

I like this deal for TML if they are able to sign Stamkos in the summer because of it, or another big free agent or trade because of it.

It's only because they had to take Michalek back in the trade that they didn't retain any salary. Phaneuf's term is longer but I'd say Phaneuf is definitely closer to being worth his contract than Michalek is.

Michalek for two more years at $4m AAV or Phaneuf into the next decade at $7m AAV ... I know which one I'd rather have.

Hope he (and his family) can get by on 5 million instead of 5.5. (just imagine if it was Canadian dollars, too)

Only 5 more years...and I rather have Phaneuf, especially in Ottawa's case. They definitely improved on the back end in this trade. Hard to acquire a top 2 dman in this league, especially one who has an all around game that Phaneuf has.

Don't think people realize how little of that money the players actually take home after paying taxes, agent, CBA, etc. Sure, they are still making a decent buck but hell, they earned it.

What? People ripping on athletes for making money? Lost money is lost money especially when they have expenses to pay. I think it would certainly be surprising to many on how little athletes take home of their "contracts". People have a pretty skewed view on how much these guys are really making. Doesn't matter if they are making more than the general public...once again, good for them on that. Honestly, good for them for making as much money as they can to set up themselves and their family for the future, especially because of the short amount of time they have to do it compared to most.

I'm don't disagree that they worked hard to get there and deserve the money they make.

But you really think people care that they don't take home all of that $5 million? C'mon.

Not ripping on athletes for making money.... I just won't feel bad for any athlete making millions of dollars to play a sport they love.

If they do it right they can play for 5-10 years taking home millions per year even after taxes and everything else playing a sport they love, and by the time they hit their mid thirties or early 40s they can be setup to live life well with plenty of money and/or investments to support them for the remainder of their life where they can again do anything they love to do for the remainder of their life.

Compared to normal people who will be lucky to retire in 30-40 years and hope to live decently for the remainder of their lives, yeah as DMelt said.... not the card you wanna play.

I think people are under the impression that they are taking home $5mil when they are likely taking home less than 40% of that. People look at these contracts without quite understanding what they really are. To me, maybe not others, there is a pretty big difference between $5mil and $2mil. I don't have a problem with people not caring how much they take home, I simply posted a reply because I'm not a fan of people acting like it doesn't hurt or matter to the person for losing money. It does.
