I'm don't disagree that they worked hard to get there and deserve the money they make.

But you really think people care that they don't take home all of that $5 million? C'mon.

His fine is more than I make in 3 years, and I make more money than 95% of Americans, so I don't feel too sorry for him.

It certainly sucks for them, but I lose a quarter of my paycheck to taxes and insurance and additional expenses as well. It happens. I understand that their 25% is a lot different than mine and they probably lose more than 25% ... but I'm not going to feel bad or anything like that.

Bringing home 10% of their pay is probably double my CEO's salary lol.

I know taxes and junk hurt, I just cannot feel bad for any athlete.... they make gargantuan sums of money in comparison to an average worker, and they get that money to play a game they love.... They can theoretically ensure neither they nor none of their immediate family ever want for anything.

Whereas there are working American Families who struggle to feed their kids enough.

With those 2 things existing I will never shed a tear for professional athletes.

I get both sides of the argument. They do get paid incredible salaries to play a game.

On the other hand, they work their entire lives to reach this point and make sacrifices beyond anything we'd be able to comprehend to get to that point. Those sacrifices include their time, their physical well-being, their families and a host of other things. Along with the complete inability to lead anything resembling a "normal" life. But these guys are the best in the world what they do. And I've always believed that if you're one of the best in the world at some profession that can turn a profit, you're going to be very, very rich yourself.

However, the top actors and singers are underpaid, IMHO, because they bring so much joy, spiritual comfort and ecstatic release from our humdrum existence. They are thee psychologist of our collective soul. :smug2:

Well they work the first what, 20 years of their lives to get to the NHL.... but it aint like the rest of us do nothing for the first 20 years of our lives..... well most of us with decent careers anyways.

And keep in mind they worked 20 years to get to the point they are paid millions to play this game, where thousands of their peers are not quite good enough and sacrificed all the same of their body and their time and their family.

In the end IMO these guys have a gift, a chance to not only play in the NHL but to make money beyond anything a normal person can make at any kind of normal job.

Taxes suck for all of us.... maybe they suck a bit more for these guys, but in the end if they make 5-7 million a year they still bring home money that would easily pay off your mortgage or car or any debt you have.

If the argument is that they pay so much to get to make that money in the NHL ,then I call bullshit.

Lots of normal people have hard times with their body, get injured, need surgery, I have and so have many people in the first 20 years of their life and we don't make millions per year. I work a job where my hours are crazy and I have had to travel and I was working through both my nieces 1st bday and Super Bowl on this past Sunday. And on top of it I don't love my job and millions of people making less than 100k are in the same boat.

My point is they didn't pay that much more into their life to get to the NHL than many normal people pay into their life just to work an average corporate job.

So that being said even if they are taxed 40% and it sucks they are still well ahead compared to any normal people.

I think the biggest difference between their jobs and the rest of the world's jobs, though, is the total lack of job security. Guys get hired/fired/traded/released/sent/sent down/called-up at a pace which is unlike any other job market in the world.

Sure but think of the average salary of the NHL bottom dweller who maybe bounces between AHL and NHL or gets cut/claimed/not-claimed and the average salary of a person working a regular job who gets laid off.

Even then the difference is not comparable....its not like those guys can go "Well I make 700k a year to play hockey but the risk I take playing hockey rather than working a regular job is worth the extra 650k I make"

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Bulls
  2. Golden State Warriors
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
I would bounce between 7 hockey leagues if it meant I could get paid 700k.

That lack of job security is exactly why I think pro athletes deserve to make more money than us commonfolk

But they don't.... plenty of guys play for way less and still carry the same lack of job security if not more.

My cousin's both played for like 50-60k in the UHL which folded into the ECHL.... plenty of dudes down in those leagues have job security issues and play for common salaries.

Anyways, I am not arguing what any pro athlete makes..... they make what the market dictates, it is what it is.... I am just saying they make a ton of money compared to the common person and they get to play a game they love.... I will never shed a tear for what they have to pay in taxes or to agents or anything else.

Most people, in most states, are at-will employees and can be let go by their employer at anytime for any reason.
