So STOKED! The huge and hugely important Lichtenstein retrospective which opened at the Art Institute of Chicago a couple of weeks ago and is their "BIG" special exhibit for 2012 has not only gotten great local reviews (naturally) but has also pulled great national reviews (and probably will garner more nationally when it eventually moves to the National Gallery). This is the most comprehensive retrospective of his works in decades and is just MAJOR---not too shabby to hit up the AIC, the Nat'l. Gallery in DC, the Tate Modern, and then to top it off the Pompidou. Considering that one of his works sold for a record high $45 mil only a couple of weeks ago at Sotheby's it's turning out to be QUITE the 2012 for the Lictenstein legacy. This retrospective was jointly conceived and currated by the AIC and the Tate Modern so job well done fancy-schmancy art people!

We like to wait for the AIC special exhibits to settle in and abate crowd-wise and so we won't be going until summer but we're sooooooooo looking forward to it. I am loving that they decided to stage it in the special exhinit galleries in the old/traditional wing of the Museum and surprisingly not in the newer Modern wing. This is what the AIC would have done the majorty of my life before the Modern wing so I am cool with it. . .and the intentional juxtaposition since from what I have read about it, the exhibit focuses a nice chunk of its attention on his interpretation of tradtional or classic themes and older masterworks. Can you say AWESOME?

I work across from the art Institute so I see all the signs every day and they are intriguing and make me want to go but I know 0 about him, so thanks for the links. I would really like to go sometime. I believe they still have the free Wednesday evening or something so I may have to go then since I am not a huge art person but would like to check it out.

Ahahaha! I don't know if it's adorable in its naivete or else pitiful in its cluelessness but you won't get to see a Special Exhibit at the AIC for free. You can go to the other non-ticketed parts of the Museum on free days because what's free is general admission but not Special Exhibits. Just like at the Shedd, free day doesn't include admittance into the Oceanarium. Same at the Field Museum, the MCA, etc.

If you're that close, why haven't you gone to the late night events they host. At least they used to, with jazz and food and stuff. THAT would be cool to see.

I'm suddenly not sure if I imagined that or if it was waaaaaaaaay long ago. Meh.

Ahhh good to know, I should have figured it was something like that, we are members of the Field and they do something similar so I should have suspected it would be the same. Probably still worth the price of admission though, I think they have neighborhood days maybe? I know the Shedd does. I'll have to look into as I look into your links above about who this guy is.

Don't know why i haven't, probably cause I don't like to fly solo, I can be real social but I always need a wing man. I don't think you are making it up as I think I've seen notices somewhere.

I'm an AIC member and am definitely going to see the Lichtenstein exhibit ASAP. I have heard it is fantastic and quite humorous.

Books - I haven't read my newsletters in a while... are you serious that a Picasso exhibit is coming next year? Wow.

Serious as a heart attack.

And it's gonna be HUMONGOUS! In comparison, the Lichtenstein's 125+ works seems tiny compared to the 250 pieces that the AIC is gonna bust out for the upcoming Picasso. 250 freakin' pieces! It's gonna be rainin' Pablo! They wouldn't be putting in newsletters yet as it's not until next winter but you know how all art museums list past, current, and future exhibits.

Feast. . .

**** dickasso and his over rated garbage.

I kid...i want to see over 200 of his works. To be honest that would take a week for me to really take in. Small shows here at the vancouver gallery takes me eons to really get through. I spent an hour at one miro last year and ill admit i cried.

Over 200 picassos might actually be just too damn big. I dont think my emotional reactions could take it after 20.

Im actually not a huge picasso fan to be honest. I obviously am in love with a few of his works but compared to other artists i dont find picassos lifes works that exciting. He is def one of the most important figures in art history and i wouldnt disagree with his place there.

Right now my dream exhibit would be clyfford still. Give me clyfford over picasso any day.

Don't know if I ever posted this. Not usually a fan of doing this to another's artwork, but this turned out absolutely amazing. Unfortunately it's not the original video because the Picasso estate made them take it down so this one is slightly degraded and a little choppy.

I'm definitely down to see the exibit next year. Hard to believe, but I too have never been to The Art Institute of Chicago.

250 works? That will be more than one visit for sure...

My friends who went through the Lichtenstein exhibit were there for 5 hours, I think.

WTFever! Like we give a shit in Chicago that you're not a Picasso fanboy. Fine! That just means more Picasso for us. Also, careful there. You sound a wee bit too Still smitten---I'd hate to have to read a story about you like the ones about that cray-cray lady in Denver who attacked a Still and then de-robed and rubbed herself down it! Although if you *do* ever lose it like that at least have the fucking decency to have The Mule be there so that she can capture it for internet meme posterity on her cell, kthanx.

Wow! That "Guernica" video is AMAZING!

Also? Can't believe you've never hit up the AIC. I don't know why but I find that wholly bizarre and at odds with your personality and interests. Lucky for you, the AIC's participation in the Google Art Project went live back in April and it is fucking AWESOME . .well as long as you're on a sweet monitor, lol.

I confess that I love, love, LOVE the Google Art Project! For reals. I have been known to spend hours looking at the collections from various museums and taking advantage of the awesome technology to really look "into" the works. That shit is amazing. It's like taking the absolute best, BEST art books by say Rizzoli or Abbeyville or Abrams and animating them and taking shit to a whole 'nother level.

Yeah, that Picasso is fo' sho gonna be an all day, wear comfy winter boots, have lunch at one of the Museum eateries affairs. Ha! I relish the challenge! I am a leisurely exhibit viewer---I don't like to go with folks who are impatient and/or people who try to rush me. I needs my time! I don't ever buy the audio tours so I need to view the pieces at my own pace while also reading every text display and all the while trying to really appreciate the moment and the fact that I am getting to see pieces that I never have before and likely might not ever get a chance to again in my life.

I love it. Im not a big fan of these type of things either but this is great. I remember you posting it before. I really wonder why his estate made them take the original video down. I'm sure the estate isn't in financial or cultural ruins but copy rights are copy rights. However if you have to start paying copy rights to honor, celebrate and possibly invite new viewers into the world of a great artist and the art world..then I personally see problems with that. Esp in the world of arts.

If I ever decide to impregnate a Still i am very capable of filming it myself thank you very much. Just not sure how much film it will take to do so. Cause I am going to make sweet sweet love to this piece for a good 3 days non stop.

Pfft. I should have pegged you as a straight-up art molester ages ago. Three days? Yeah riiiight. But thanks for the laughs that come from imagining your delusions of stamina.
