That’s dumb. They could have had Zach Frazier with the pick they gave up.
If Frazier had come out a year early, but he was still in school when PIT used that pick.

I don’t think he’s just any RB. But as I said, if Carter or Graham are gone, Nolen, Simmons and Jeanty are the ones in play for me. His potential is that far more superior to almost any other backs that have been drafted.
I would not mind Simmons followed up by Jackson.

Well damn. Apologies to msadows. I still thought it was a dumb trade and distinguishable from studying the only blue-chip offensive talent in this draft class by a team that has the worst RB room in the league.

Pass on OL at #9 because an OT may be G and there will be G available in round 2

Then all the G go mid-end of r1/early r2 and then it's the "oline value wasn't there so draft another position "

The Bears have done this for years and it's why they are where they are with 1-2 starting caliber OL heading into 2025

Among many other things...

There were plenty of other OL that year.

I understand the thinking in the Claypool trade, but it was just poor judgement in the player analysis.

even ryan poles isnt dumb enough to draft a rb in the top 10.
Ryan Pace would trade the 1st and a 2nd to move up one spot to get him.

The trade was one that many people in the media and on here liked at the time.

The bears desperately needed a WR because they had to determine what fields was. They had mooney trying to be a #1 when he clearly wasnt and a bunch of bums outside of that.

People forget the bears were not the only team that wanted claypoop.

This is all revisionist history again. In the long run it was a terrible trade but it wasnt some dumb shit that was not necessary, they clearly needed to evaluate fields to know if he was worth keeping or not.

Every GM makes poor trades, decisions, and drafts.

this thread will seem really funny when jeanty rushes for like 3.8ypc against the penn state defense.

What is revisionist history?

There has to be a history to revise. The history is and has always been that the trade was a failure, because there isn't any other logical interpretation once we all saw what happened.

As far as what people thought when it happened, my stance is the same as it was then. I understood it because the Bears really needed a WR, but I wasn't a fan of the player or the cost.

Of course all GMs make mistakes. Not sure what's wrong with calling them on it. I didn't bash him on it at the time and I'm not now. But it's one of many mistakes.

Theres certainly a decent chance Jeanty is the BPA at where the Bears end up drafting. I hope not, I think thats close to (but not quite) the worst case scenario for the Bears in terms of how the draft plays out. Its so tough to rebuild the O and D line if the Bears spend a first on a RB. Difficult but not impossible, although compounding the difficulty is it requires the Bears to approach FA assuming they are getting Jeanty, since most of the FAs that they need to make drafting RB first work are going to be signed long before the draft. Key among them to me is you need to sign an OT, probably for $18-$25M. And you have to do that before you know who is there at 1, so if you do sign Stanley to $25M or Alaric or someone to $18-20M and then Banks is there at 9 ... well that fuckin sucks. Best thing the Bears can do if the draft does shakeup in a way where Jeanty is BPA is trade down, it takes 2 to tango though and if no one is biting, well then thats just a big ol' draft day dick in the butt for the Bears.

People shit on the trade but it was a logical move at the time, many act like it wasn't and a dumb as **** move by poles.

Like 80% of this board was all for it and very excited.

Gm's miss on guys, even the glorious brett veach.

Jeanty might be BPA but I doubt he's the only one in the top bucket. There will be other comparable players to choose from most likely.

I don't know why you're going on to me, I don't really give a **** who shit on it or what 80% of the board thought about it.

My issue is how good is he actually? Outside of San Jose State, UNLV, and Oregon the defenses he faced rank:

108 in ypc
122 in ypc
128 in ypc
100 in ypc
106 in ypc
117 in ypc
131 in ypc
125 in ypc

He's certainly great but he's beating up on shit defenses. We will see how he performs vs a top 10 penn state run defense tonight, my expectations are not too great.

There are plenty of mid round backs who can likely be good too.

Just no. Fix the oline. I don't care how good Jeanty is.
The funny part is he's not that good. He's a dime a dozen with no real elite qualities.

Tonight will probably only inflate his value because all of the primetime TV scouts will get to watch him in person and draw conclusions based on one game.

Don't miss out tonight TV scouts who haven't watched Jeanty all year and have only box score scouted him. He's playing Penn State tonight and if you're from Big Ten country we all know a good game will carry extra weight in your evaluation of him.

He certainly has elite contact balance, but you're too stupid to know what that is.

Considering you thought jordan howard would be the next walter payton I wouldnt listen to a single thing you have to say about a running back.

He really does. He's got that quality where he just bounces off tackles while barely losing momentum.
