I agree with THEM 100%. Without a human controlling all of those mechanical weapons you would get zilch out of them.

Relax man, I don't think they were intentionally screwing with you.

No it is a bullshit holier than thou answer. "Oh all these weapons are useless without man..blah blah blah" man has been fight each other since we evolved it is our nature, we are territorial get over it. Peace is great and all but we will never see a time, barring an outside world ending threat, were we all hold hands and sing kumbaya.

Damned straight Das Boot is an awesome movie...they just need it on Blue Ray.

The whole "complimentary crew" was to eiliminate the language barrier and focus more on specs and capabilities rather than figuring out how to use it.

Anyhow, as for Helicopers and armor, it's a lot like airplanes and armor: It adds weight. In an airplane's sense, that means you need to eek more speed or a better lifting surface, which will add drag and reduce speed.

For a chopper, Adding more armor of any time means more weight, which means that the blades have to be redisigned to lift more for their size and speed (which adds drag and thus means more fuel comnsumption), the blades have to turn faster (larger, more powerul engine which sucks fuel and adds more weight), and the added mas means the thing handles worse and inertial effects have to be taken into consideration.

There comes a point in which trading one value for another becomes ineffective, and at that point the engineers just have to call it quits until the technology catches up.

I tend to agree with you. Without a "THEM" that is in conflict with all of "US", its will be nigh impossible for humans not to be in conflict with each other, from the perspective of war.

Even then who knows, american indians didnt make attempts to seriously band together until it was too late when it came to north American colonization. Prior to that Indians would ally with X european faction for benefit against rival indian tribes.

Although I think that had more to do with their lack of understanding of the nature of the european colonization. I would hope we would be smart enough across the world to treat any "alien" attack as a threat to us all, for all time, and not a situation we can exploit to get a leg up on another country. i.e. a country helping aliens conquer another country, for plunder and territory.

Regardless, if we repelled the threat once it was over we would be back to our old ways, unless we seriously entered a galactic community, where encounters with aliens were a real and constant prospect.

Thats one thing I found cool about Mass Effect, Earth still wasnt under a world government, the Alliance was a complete separate entity from "Earth" Comprised of people of all nations funded on its own by the colonies, like an independent space government where earth was still a factioned mess.

You just said it a lot prettier than I did today. I was thinking either alien invasion or world ending asteroid (meteorite whatever the correct term for big space rock that will end our asses)

Do guns kill people, or do people use those guns to kill people?

If that is not the argument at hand, then I am lost you two.

Neither, bullets do. No bullets the gun then is an expensive paperweight

In all seriousness, no guns don't kill people, people holding the gun do.

But without that gun, would that person kill the other one?

What if you pistol whip someone to death or bludgeon them with the butt of a rifle?

Could still classify it as a paperweight and then you bludgeoned someone to death with a paper weight.

I've never done it of course, but I have been taught plenty of ways to kill another human with just my hands.

Okay, here's one for BHC:

Situation: You can be captain of one sub of either of the two following subs classes, with a top-notch complimentary crew, but only of the following WWII sub classes: Which would you pick:

US Balao Class or German Type XXI

...and...why?

For me, the Balao......built better and actually saw service during the war. My limited international vocabulary has nothing to do with it, Supra, you smartass. The Balao saw lots of action during WWII, the XXI's didn't....and another thing, important to me, as I was a fast attack guy, firepower.....Balaos had 10 tubes, 6 forward, and 4 aft....the XXIs only had 6 forward.

The XXI's were used by various Allied countries after the war, and as a matter of fact the ones the Russians got were later used as basis for 2 or 3 of their own designs. The XXI's were the first to incorporate modular design building, what we are doing now with the Virginia class...build the sections of hull first, then put them all together.....but craftmanship was so poor they had a lot of post production rework between initial construction and being deemed sea/war worthy before the end of the war. Only a handful of them saw service....I want to say out of the 100 (this is a guess to actual number made...but I know it was 100 at least but not much past that) or so constructed only a small number, maybe 10 or so ever were considered war ready.

From what I've read, a lot of the XXI's design elements were not just copied by the sovierts, but also the US for Guppy. After all, the Balao was about 8 knots submerged top speed, while the XXI was about 17 knots submerged. A lot of the XXI's design was for true submerged warfare (although that wouldn't be realized until the Nautilus), whereas the Balao was a standard WWII "submersible" boat.

On the other hand, the US's radar capabilities were excellent, and the Balao has the same surface range with a much faster top speed, and like you said, armaments. 10 tubed compared to 6. Further it was a big reason why the US suceeded over Japan where the Nazis failed over the Allies.

Either way, both are my favorite to play in simulations (SH3 and SH4).

The result was that out of 118 assembled XXIs, only four were rated fit for combat before the war ended in Europe.
