I saw this on Yahoo where the Illinois High School Assoc won't let this kid play in a football game at his high school because he didn't attend enough practices. He wasn't able to attend them because he was in Basic Training in Ga. My question is why is this kid even in Basic Training if he still has a year of High School left?

http://rivals.yahoo.com/highschool/...r-unfit-for-football-af?urn=highschool-wp4590

you can join at 17 with parents permission. When I joined there were alot of highschoolers who had another year left. at 19 i was a fucking grandpa in basic.

They join with the split option, lets you go to basic in the summer one year, then you can go to AIT the following summer, then you are in. I did a split option since I was in college.

Basic is the shit everyone goes to, AIT (Advanced individual training) is your job training, whatever you signed up to do in the military.

This kid probably went to benning or relaxin jackson. I was supposed to go there for basic, but ended up going to Ft. Knox. Which was one of the last all male bastions of basic training.

As to the story, their board can suck my **** with their "football shape" fat guys can play football, there were times in basic training I thought I was going to die from physical stress.

The fucking bayonet course at knox was the worst physical thing I endured in my entire life no fucking joke, we had to make it up this hill in 3 minutes in full battle rattle stabbing all these dummies on the way up. When i got to the top I had to strip my gear off because I was going to hyperventilate with all my gear on, i was freaking the **** out. That hill was practically completely vertical and a quarter mile.

I have a question about housing. One of the guys in my project group sent me an email the other day saying he was on a plane for Germany. I thought he was just on vacation or something, but he told me today he is in the Air Force and is going to be in Germany. He said he is staying at a hotel, but has to actively look for housing. Doesn't the military have housing for these people when they ship them to these places? That has to be a difficult task trying to find a place to live in a foreign country.

Yes, there are temporary living facilities. The where and what are determined by a number of facotrs; rank, single or married, family size and the availablitity at a given base to name a few. Sometimes you have to stay at a hotel. Either way it's on Uncle Sam's dime if its part of an official change of station.

Even in the Guard they will put you up in a hotel for your weekend a month if you live more than 20 miles away. I would commute from Joliet to Crestwood (which is maybe 20 miles or so), and I could get a hotel room if I wanted, and the military doesnt skimp on that either, they arent sticking you in a motel 6. I mean you arent staying in a penthouse at the hilton, but they usually put out for decent diggs.

I think this could be a whole different thread topic.

My response in two words to the Panetta discussion of getting rid of the pension plan for those serving 20 years or longer...

That is only because Crapwood did not have it's own living facilities. At Midway there was room for us in the facility at the airport. So I opted for going out to the bars in the area and sneaking out of some chick's place before formation.

i wouldnt have slept there if they did. I used to stay over night in the springfield armory when i would work the retention program. I did that because we would get drunk and then go **** with the recruits all night long. That sunday was always rough though.

I could never bring myself to be a hardass though, its just not in my nature, which is why I refused the constant hounding for me to become an officer, that and i would have had to sign a new contract, I have no business leading anyone at anything. Those numbskulls would always call me sir.

And crestwood/robbins is the fucking ghetto. There were always gangbangers sitting across the street on their porch drinking 40's all day.

IMO if they want a quality, motivated all volunteer force it's a mistake. The benifits (education, healthcare, retirement) are what draw people to the military. Keep chipping away at those and eventually they will struggle to sign people. I could see conscription making a come back 5-10 years from now should this happen.

What do you military guys think of ROTC? My nephew just graduated high school and has a chance to join the ROTC - he wants to go into nursing. They told him he would need to do 4 years of service in ROTC but that he would come in as an officer. After he graduates he has to work 2 years in the field at some assigned miltiary location. But all the schooling would be paid by the military. My wife and his family are all excited about it but I had a roommate in college who was in the Marines and he did not think highly of ROTC candidates - he felt they hadn't earned their 'dues'. Wanted to see what others thought.

Is it a full ride 4 year ROTC scholarship or joining ROTC for the tuition assistance?. Either way its a good deal IMO. If he is joining and not on a 4 year full ride, he can alway do the 2 and screw route while in college if he decides he doesn't care for the ROTC/military. Not everyone is cut out for military service.

There is no best way to become an officer. I've met plenty of idiots and assholes who went to the service acadamies, ROTC, or were able to get a commission directly from civilian life. My own preference for a CO was always a "mustang" officer; one who had been enlisted and got his commission while on active duty. Which by the way is the route I took, but even then I've met assholes who took that route..

It was a full ride I recall. He's afraid he won't be respected though if he goes this route - he doesn't want the easy path if it means the active duty guys won't respect him. I agree with him but of course his parents are only looking at the free ride and nothing else.

I don't think it will be much of an issue as to what route he took to get a commission. The Nursing Core in the AF and probably all the other services is largely female. I'd guess @ 99% female. I suspect he'll probably take more shit for being a male nurse. It's unfortunate, but gender discrimination works both ways.

He's a good looking kid - athletic, fit, and the chicks like him. I'm sure he'd like being with 99% females - but the guys might think he's *** and give him crap as you mentioned. His parents want him to do it but he's 50/50 at the moment - has to decide this week.
