There isnt anything more healthy for you than an organic, ketogenic diet utilizing intermittent fasting. It is the key to circumventing so many diseases, body failures, and even various retardations. It truly is amazing.

Wtf is intermittent fasting exactly?

Like, I know what it means in general... but, in regards to keto, what are you supposed to do? How long? Etc....

Usually you need about a ~12 hour fast to deplete the excess energy stores in your body, so most fasting cycles are in that 12-24 range. Personally, I do a 16/8 fasting cycle like 3 or 4 times a week, where on those days I have a 16 hour window where I will only drink water and black coffee. 8 hours to eat zero-low carb, high fat foods like I normally would.

This sounds hard if you've never done keto before, but it really isn't hard to do at all. When you're in ketosis, you don't get the same hunger urges you do as when your body is producing glucose. It's incredibly easy to skip meals.

real strict keto can be hazardous to yo health.. dat liver mang..
Don't know what you mean by real strict ketosis, my friend down under. If the body is producing ketones, you're in ketosis, period. In ketosis, fat is not sent to the liver to be stored. The body can't burn fat so the fat is sent to the liver to be converted to ketones which can then be burned and used as fuel.

Your liver problems come mostly from obesity which in turn comes from alcohol, sugar and fructose. Fructose goes straight to the liver and the liver can only hold so much before storing it as fat. Other simple carbs contain both glucose and fructose. This is what leads to fatty liver. Roughly 3 out of 10 people have a fatty liver and it's not because they do ketosis. It's because they follow conventional thinking and thus have a high carb diet. It's also because they use fake oils to cook with. If you were to look at when the US went from fairly fit to very overweight on a large scale, it's when the anti-fat campaign began in the late 70s and the fake oils like margarine, canola and vegetable hit the market and quickly saturated the market. Global obesity doubled in 1980 when all this happened.

When I was a kid, you couldn't find these fake oils. Back then, even fast food places like McDonalds were cooking in healthy tallow or lard oils. Now they all cook with very heavily processed fake oils like canola and vegetable. Vegetable oil doesn't even come from vegetables. It comes from seeds and beans, stuff you can't just get oil out of naturally. You have to have chemicals, heat and other catalysts to get oil from this. It's unnatural and has nothing but a negative effect on your body. These fake oils are inflammatory and lead to weight gain and other health issues.

The main thing ketosis preaches is to use the natural and healthy oils and throw out the margarine, canola, vegetable and other heavily processed oils. So ketosis isn't hazardous to your health in this manner, it's actually much better than what has become the norm and very good for your health.

I feel like people dont understand the difference betweek dirty-keto and a normal ketogenic diet.

If all you eat is mcdonalds burgers with no bun, technically you'll be in ketosis... That's still a terribly unhealthy way to eat. You'll drop weight quick, but the effects it will have on your health are so not worth it. This is an example of "dirty-keto".. it's shit.

Now, you eat low carb, rich in fat foods i.e. avocados, fish, coconut oil etc, resulting in a healthy ketosis, and my god... you're going to feel your body start to come alive.

There's literally no reason in 2018 to be eating things like bread, noodles, excessive sugary fruits, and grain related products. I'm sorry we were lied to back in the day, but we know better now.

While Intermittent Fasting and ketosis are often linked together, they are 2 different kinds of diets with the same goal in mind. The goal is to get your body to burn fat as fuel rather than sugar. With ketosis, this is done by greatly restricting carbs to 20 grams or less. By restricting carbs so much, you leave your body no choice to use fat rather than sugar as fuel.

With Intermittent fasting, you need not be as stringent with the amount of carbs but still avoid the simple carbs. The act of fasting for longer time periods then gives the insulin plenty of time to go to base level and with no sugar coming in it, again, has no choice but to use fat as energy. The more popular Intermittent Fasting protocols call for either a 16, 18 or 20 hour period in which no food or calories of any kind will be take in.

Another thing to add: the longer your body is in a state of ketosis, the more "carb resistant" your body can get. Now, this will vary person to person depending on your metabolic makeup. For me, I have slowly started adding complex carbs back into my diet again, and am up to about 40g net carbs a day while maintaining around ~6.0 mmol/l on the ketone 40s scale.

Just for reference, this was after about 4 months of a strict diet containing ~15g net carbs a day.

While I agree totally with you, there has to be some room for concessions based on the fact that the food market has become what it is. With McDonalds for instance, that burger patty is not going to do the same harm as that bun and the fries and other stuff cooked in their canola or vegetable oil. The bun, alone, is about twice the simple carbs you'd want to take in on any given day. And the oil they cook in is much more of a problem than their burgers.

Same goes for when you by your own stuff to cook at home. It's easy to know and find the best oils to use. These are coconut oil, real butter, ghee and the natural oils like them. But with meat, you can actually pay a higher price for something that says grass-fed and it could actually come from a source that's been fed grains in a feed lot for 99% of its time. And with fish, how do you know what you're really getting? There is a big difference between farm raised and wild caught and certain fish are more likely to contain higher amounts of mercury. When you have a diet that's high in meat, the waters are going to get muddy even if you make a strong attempt to get the best type but as long as you stick with the real oils and limit carbs as much as possible, you'll reap plenty of the benefits.

Of course you can only do the best you can reasonably do. I'd never encourage people to give up their social lives for a diet/lifestyle change. Don't be afraid to go out to eat, go to bars etc, but when you can, make concsiously healthy choices.

Im guilty of this as well. Everyone is going to be.. it's not realistic to assume otherwise. I eat lunch out with co-workers 3 times a week usually. I know I'm not eating the optimal things I could eat if say we go get pizza and I'm scraping the toppings off and eating them with a fork.. but I'm not going to deny myself the opportunity at that engagement because of that.

I was talking more about the lazy people that want to take the easy way out. Ordering low carb choices at fast food restaurants and consuming them every day of your life, while this may put you into ketosis is not going to be a "healthy" lifestyle. It's just not. You will run into pitfalls down the road from this type of behavior.

For everyone reading this thread and/or are considering a switch to a ketogenic diet: please keep in mind that the figures tossed around for optimal carb fat and protein intake vary from person to person. Some people drop into ketosis much easier than others. Some require more cardio and exercize than others. This isn't a one size fits all glove here. For reference, I'm 6'5, around 185 lbs and have always done moderate cardio with light to moderate lifting depending on life circumstances. It takes me about 2 to 3 days to drop into a ketogenic state from a glucose producing state.

That being said, it is obtainable and achievable by EVERYONE, and something I would strongly consider, especially if any of you here are diabetic or suffer from debilitating neurological conditions, or have a history of it in the family tree. The whole reason I started this last year was because of the history of type 2 diabetes in my family, along with the prevalence of senile dementia in my family.

I'd be happy to answer anyones questions, whether here or in private. Sounds like Spartan would be too. But I wouldn't recommend asking him about vaxxing [emoji38]

My wife and I are going to start some sort of low-carb diet next month-ish, once my parents leave. Most likely she’ll be doing keto. I’m super interested in the carnivore diet, will definitely be checking on that some more. I’ll also be fasting some, my wife may not be though since she’s still breastfeeding.

If anyone has done/is doing carnivore I’d really like to hear what you have to say about it

I know people have had some success on it. I tried it for a week, i felt better on a traditional keto diet.

I wouldnt encourage a carnivore diet for more than a couple weeks... there's too many essential fats and vitamins you miss out on. If you're going to do this, do your research and be sure you're taking the supplements you'll need, because you WILL need them. I'm interested to see the people that have been doing this come a couple years from now... I dont think they'll still be doing this. It's really not natural.

If anything, i'd start with a carnivore diet to drop into ketosis quicker. You'll get into ketosis very very quickly with this tactic.

Be sure to start drinking like twice as much water as you were previously... this is important.

Replying with quote is spazzing out, but Gus said he was going to start keto. It really took me 2-3 weeks to really figure my shit out, so if I were to go back in time and help past me out, I'd tell him:

  • To help with Keto flu drink some chicken broth, couple cups a day. (This might be a placebo thing, but people recommended it and it sure seemed to help)
  • Use a food tracker, I used www.myfitnesspal.com it was easy and free, you can set daily macro goals and shit. I think using a food tracker was the single biggest thing that helped me stop being a fatass. But I'm also a numbers/goal person, so it was super in my wheelhouse.
  • "Keto" versions of non keto foods suck. Every product I bought that marketed itself as a "Keto Version of X!" was trash. Just eat foods that are naturally in the keto zone.
  • If you go on reddit or whatever and look at Keto stuff everyone is making recipes that are like 50% cream cheese and 25% butter. If you're doing keto to lose fat those recipes aren't going to help. Eat good, lean meats, lots of cruciferous veggies, and then round out with good fats.
  • Don't make "Fat Bombs", doing keto does not mean hitting your fat macro. Your fat macro is not a goal, it's a limit.
  • The only non sugar sweetener I found that wasn't nasty was erythritol. It doesn't have any of that nasty artificial sweetener grossness, I don't even do keto anymore and I use it instead of sugar whenever I need to sweeten something. I buy Anthony's off Amazon.
  • I don't have much of a sweet tooth, if any of you do I highly recommend Protein Fluff. A lot of body builder types use it as a dessert, snack, meal replacement when they're cutting and another way to get more protein. Shit is SUPER filling and if you do it right comes out like mousse. It was a go to for me.

If you guys have other questions, let me know, it really took me a couple-a-few weeks to figure all this shit out. I can recommend foods, recipes, whatever.

EDIT: Like Novak said, drink water. You need to drink WAY MORE WATER on Keto. Seriously, you should be drinking so much water that you have to piss once an hour.

Shifty you must have missed out on Monk Fruit extract ;) best sugar "substitute" i could find on the market that adhere's to my organic rules.

As far as the rest of your post, fat macro is important. That's the only part i take issue with really. You dont need to "hit it" per se, but if your fat intake is less than your protein intake, you risk your body attempting to convert those proteins into glucose, which is going to cause your muscles to deflate and is going to make you feel like shit. It can also contribute to that "keto flu" you mentioned. The chicken broth isnt a placebo, it works because of the sodium content in the chicken broth, along with the fat content it brings.. Most people new to keto don't realize exactly how much electrolytes they are going to need. This mean add salt to everything you can, take supplements for (or consciously consume foods high in) magnesium and potassium.

Good thing to get used to doing is bullet coffee in the morning. This is incredible when you are first start keto. It's essentially coffee blended together with various fat sources of your choice. Mine is ghee and coconut oil with a little heavy cream. Blend that up high speed for about 15 secs and you get a 0g-2g carb frothy substance that can act as a meal replacement or a fat bomb. It's part of my daily routine.

I can only speak for myself, but, I was usually close to my protein macro and quite a bit lower on my fat macro most days and stayed in Ketosis. Looking at my history on myfitnesspal I was always right at (+-10%) daily protein macro and was usually 20ish percent under my fat macro.

I haven't heard of dirty keto until you mentioned it. When I last did keto I was maybe eating dirty half of the time, schedule and poor planning for eating during the day(at work). I felt good, the 2nd and 3rd day after starting were the worst for me, no energy, sluggish.

I think most keto macro guides put you at 250% fat intake vs protein intake. I aim for double, so 200%.

The issue comes from when you have a LOWER fat intake than protein intake.

I think you misunderstood my post, or i didnt word it clearly enough.
