In all fairness, the article references a date of 1998, when was it that common knowledge that galaxies might have shapes other than spiral?

there has been knowledge about galaxies being other than spiral for a very long time.
On the other side of things,it could be argued the fact that not all galaxies are spiral-shaped may still not be common knowledge. I guess it may be now, but that's besides the point. It's a work regarding "scientific research", so a lot of it isn't supposed to be common knowledge.
