That class could only be offered in a building like Faner!

Very fine trade by the Hawks. My only question is, what the hell was Dudlley thinking? Buff is a guy who only shows up in the playoffs, and since the Thrashers probably aren't going to be in the playoffs anytime soon, why trade for Buff? Wouldn't be surprised if Buff is on the trading block at the deadline next spring.

As for Aliu, I vomitted when we wasted a 2d round pick on that guy, and glad to see him go. Sopel, thanks for your service, but we can find guys for that role at a fraction of the cost.

I don't agree on Aliu, but now I do after he failed when given the chance. I agree about Dudley, still don't know what he was trying to get other than fat contracts for overpaid players.

Hmm maybe Dudley was thinking he had 11 goals, including 5 game WINNING, in the playoffs. Should have had Con Smyth consideration and I believe is an NHL record for winning goals in the playoffs. Buff would be a great addition to many NHL teams in the rebuild process and it sucks the Salary Cap made him a casualty!

Just a hunch Larry. Let's bet some money he's on the block next year.

Good move for both organizations.

If Akim ever figures out his head hes going to be scary. Still pretty young.
I think we got fairly good return on this deal considering our lack of leverage here, but lets be real. Anytime you give up established NHL players for picks/prospects, you are losing the deal. No way the Hawks make this trade if they aren't in cap hell. Its a good trade only if we capitalize on the picks and/or Morin pans out. If none of that happens, it's going to be looked at as a bad trade, plain and simple. A necessary one, yes, but not necessarily a good one.
I hate giving up Buff, but how is it possible the Hawks could EVER lose this trade? Sopel is near retirement and Eager was more heart than talent. Aliu was NEVER going to play for the Hawks. We got a number one for Buff, a number two for Eager, a fourth line center for Sopel, and one of the top prospects in juniors for Aliu.

Unless I'm missing something.

What surprises me about this, is I thought Buff would go to some team who didn't properly scout Buff and just buy the playoff hype. But Dudley's been watching Buff for a long time and should know better. Dudley gave up a lot in this trade (especially if this prospect is as good as people are saying). I never was a Dudley guy, and this just confirms my previous opinion.

If the picks don't pan out at all and Buff turns out to be a new John LeClair, then we certainly will lose this trade.

I don't want anyone to think I'm not in favor of the trade or am negative about the return we got. I'm not. I understand why the deal was done. But Buff could develop into a once in a generation type talent because he has what you can't teach. Incredible size and soft hands.

Still disagree, they had to go regardless, we shed a shit ton of cap and got VERY good returns. Great trade.

True. I guess if Scott Gomez can be traded, anything is possible.

Must have been watching a different buff all these years...

Buff does not have soft hands, more like hands made of brick. He has a hard shot which is hardly accurate. He got applauded for standing in front of the net, which he should have been doing from the start of his career. I'm not going to rave about a guy who is finally doing what every other hockey player does in front of the net.

No doubt Buff was a total stud in the playoffs and arguably should have won the Smythe. But Atlanta needs a player who can help them in the regular season. Given Buff's history, I don't see him being that guy, especially on a team like Atlanta. What's the point in having a guy who is a beast during the playoffs when he's on a good team with good linemates if you can't put him in that role? BTW, i like Buff the person a lot and really hope he succeeds, but that doesn't factor into my evaluation of the trade.

From McKenzie on it still not being official

One unconfirmed report suggests Atl would be over 50-contract limit with trade and needs to shed a contract. That is just spec tho.

I'm not arguing against the trade, but I just don't think it's the landslide everyone thinks it is. People thought we fleeced the Flames for a 2nd round pick for Rene Bourque and Bourque has gone on to score about 50 goals the last two years for Calgary.

LeClair didn't have a 50 point season until his sixth year in the league. It's not out of the realm of possibility that Buff becomes a superstar.

No it's not out of the realm, but I guarantee he doesn't do shit with Atlanta. Now teams actually have to watch him unlike with the Hawks where if they watched Buff then Hossa, Toews, Kane, Sharp, Versteeg, Bolland would light them up.

We just picked up a 1st and 2nd rounder while also getting a stud prospect in Morin. How can we lose?

No, we were supposed to get shit for Sopel, got a 2nd round pick got rid of his salary. Buff's contract is gone, got a 1st round pick. Eager's career is over with one more concussion, we got Reasoner, who will also take Madden's place for less money. Aliu was never gonna wear the IndianHead, Morin doesn't have a headcase issue, and regardless won a WJC, and put up better numbers in juniors.
