I wouldn't be surprised if Stan is lowballing Campoli, as he did Hammer last summer then matched the Sharks offer. I'm curious, who is Campoli's agent? Also, i have no idea how the arbitration process works. anybody? Thanks in Advance!

Arbitration is basically going to court. Campoli will have an advocate and the team will have an advocate and both sides will present a case as to why Campoli deserves x salary, then the judge will rule. His ruling is binding, and the team can either pay him how much the judge sees fit or walk away from the reward and Campoli will be a UFA.

It would be funny if this thing goes to the arbitrator. If I'm the Hawks and presenting my case, I would just keep showing the video of Campoli ending the Hawks season in game 7 with his terrible turnover.

And then Campoli's agent shows the arbiter the Hawks soon to be $5.5m forward not burying a sure goal right before the turnover happened!

Stalberg also filed for arbitration. **** him.

12 goals in 77 games and he deserves what?

Hey Victor, go **** yourself.

Don't they compare him to like players?

Let's see...Skates like lightning, hands of stone, and hockey sense of Karpotsev....

Skille makes 825k a year...i can't see Stalberg making more than that...

How? Olesz will not be cleared to play until sometime in Sept, which is past the Buy out window?

I was pretty sure there's no way at buying him out this year.

Maybe. If either player settles with the Hawks prior to an arbitration ruling, they can't do a buy-out this year. This issue has been discussed on other boards.

From the CBA:

11.18 Ordinary Course Buy-Outs Outside the Regular Period. Clubs shall have the

right to exercise Ordinary Course Buy-Outs outside the regular period for Ordinary

Course Buy-Outs in accordance with Paragraph 13(c)(ii) of the SPC. Each Club shall be

limited to no more than three (3) such buyouts over the term of this Agreement pursuant

to Paragraph 13(c)(ii) of the SPC. However, in the event that a Club has only one salary

arbitration hearing pursuant to Section 12.3(a) in a given League Year, such Club shall

not be entitled to exercise such a buyout outside the regular period for Ordinary Course

Buy-Outs. No Club shall exercise an Ordinary Course Buy-out outside the regular period

for any Player earning less than $1 million
.

The Hawks have two arbitration cases making them eligible to do a buyout outside the regular period.

Important dates from the CBA:

July 20 First Day of Salary Arbitration Hearings

August 4 Last Day of Salary Arbitration Hearings

August 6 Last Day for Issuance of Salary Arbitration Awards

48 hours after Club's last salary

arbitration award or settlement

Deadline for such Club's Second Buy-Out Period [Only

for Clubs with Salary Arbitration Cases]

Regarding Olesz's injury, initially it seems that this trumps the Hawks from placing him on waivers which is a necessary precursor to a buyout. In other words, when Olesz reports to camp, the buyout window is closed. From the CBA:

A Player who finishes an NHL Season on the Injured Reserve List and continues to be injured and

unable to perform his duties as a hockey Player by reason of the same injury at the time

he reports to the Club's Training Camp in the next League Year, will again be eligible to

be placed on the Club's Injured Reserve List.

But this language is in every Standard Player Contract(SPC):

5. (a) Should the Player be disabled or unable to perform his duties under this SPC he

shall submit himself for medical examination and treatment by a physician selected by the Club,

and such examination and treatment, when made at the request of the Club, shall be at its

expense unless made necessary by some act or conduct of the Player contrary to the terms and

provisions of this SPC or the rules established under Paragaph 4. At any time a physician

selected by a Club makes a determination as to whether or not a Player is disabled and unable to

perform his duties as a hockey Player for purposes of this Paragraph 5 of the SPC, such

physician shall evidence such determination by completing the form attached hereto as Exhibit

25(A), which shall be provide

Sure this can be way off base, but the buyout scenario is so heavily favored to the Hawks advantage that there may be something to this.

Word has it Campoli is looking to top that deal by asking for $3 million per season.

The most interesting situation of the three could turn out to be Frolik. He’s not eligible for arbitration due to his service time and age but there are indications he’s asking for a huge raise. His base salary was $850,000 last year and Frolik is looking for close to $2.5 million
.

Let me say this succinctly: **** THEM!!!!!!!!

Our rookies might really need to step it up, they might have a spot on the team.

**** the guys that say it's about the money 100%. See ya....

I could give a shit if any of the three are back really. I still think you could make a trade and Morin and Smith made the team out right last year. Frolik didn't do dick until the playoffs.

You want a pay day, **** off. We'll win without you. None of the three are of HUGE importance IMO.

Hey Mcdouche... So much for this being the place "players desire to play in"... They see it the place they should be PAID IN!

I understand that everyone has to get paid, but if Campoli and Frolik are really asking for that kind of cash....they can take a hike.

They can go play for some crap bottom dwellers for that kind of money.

Let Campoli walk. Not worth 3 million per year. Stalberg can walk too, not worth more than 1 million per year.

In the event they get to arbitration their short stints with the Blackhawks are over. Can anyone think of a Blackhawk player that went to arbitration and remained with the team? I guess Frolik either sign's or plays in the KHL.

This makes Stan's off season moves even more important and makes room for some of the yewts from the Icehogs.

I doubt Campoli would get 3m in arbitration. I think the Hawks should accept whatever is awarded since it's a 1-year deal only and they have the space and there isn't really a player that could replace him on the team or the market, unless they think Leddy can eat big minutes and replace Soupy.

Obviously the players are asking for the moon, that's how the negotiations work, you start high and work towards middle ground. And I have a feeling it's more about term than salary. Frolik's request isn't that outlandish IMO. He has scored 20 goals twice already, this year was obviously a down year, but he's worth around 2M if you look around the going rate for these sort of players.

Good Lord people. . .it's fucking Jesse Rogers. I mean really. In any event, I haven't read one person including Rogers who can show proof that they know what any of the RFAs have demanded exactly or what Stan has offered exactly. We just don't know what the hold-ups are attributable to in any of the 3 RFA cases---could be player price goudging, could be team low-balling, in the case of the 2 arbitration filings it could be just needing more negotiating time while protecting the team by taking away the option of Offer Sheets, could be that the arbitration players actually do think they could get more coin than Stan's offering, could be as many of the signing lags this offseason appear to be because of term. So I honestly don't get the vitriol. . .at least YET, heh.
<

CommittedIndians.com even speculates it could be Stan not giving a flying **** about them deciding to go arbitration because he's gone all "Devious Mad Scientist Genius" and recognizes it could be a boon (the man does get his jollies working the loopholes of the CBA and cap---he *is* a numbers-cruncher, lol) and help with "The Olesz Dilemma"

Arbitration May Give Blackhawks More Cap Flexibility

Posted on July 5, 2011 by Tab Bamford

When Chris Campoli and Viktor Stalberg filed for arbitration on Tuesday, most Hawks fans assumed it was a one-way ticket out of Chicago.

It might be the opposite, especially in the case of Stalberg.

Because two players on the Blackhawks filed for arbitration, the team can take advantage of a rarely used part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. There is an August buyout period that is limited to teams that go to arbitration with at least one restricted free agent. This clause allows a team to create additional cap space if an arbiter’s ruling is higher than a team’s expectations.

If the Blackhawks bought out Rostislav Olesz on August 1, they would have almost $10M in cap space to play with. According to CapGeek.com, here are the cap hits by year if the Hawks bought out Olesz on Aug. 1:

  • 2011-12: $372,222
  • 2012-13: -$227,778
  • 2013-14: -$477,778
  • 2014-15: $647,222
  • 2015-16: $647,222
  • 2016-17: $647,222

Yes, you see two negative numbers there. The Blackhawks would actually get a salary cap credit in two of the six years Olesz’s buyout would be on the books.

The trick would be proving Olesz is healthy on Aug. 1 to make the buyout possible. He had offseason knee surgery, but is expected to be healthy for the start of the season. If he is healthy on Aug. 1, he might be bought out.

So while Hawks fans are hating on Stalberg’s play, he might serve an function to the organization in the long run.

Good points. Although they don't get into the notion of just paying an Arbiter-awarded amount for Campoli since it's just one year and because of what's left in the UFA pool, in many ways your points mirror the thoughts that another CommittedIndians.com blogpost posits:

Are the Blackhawks Free Agents Asking For Too Much Money?

Posted on July 6, 2011 by Tab Bamford

According to ESPN.com’s Jesse Rogers, the remaining restricted free agents on the Blackhawks’ roster are all expecting huge raises. And that has slowed down negotiations between the team and players.
But how much is too much?

According to Rogers’ article, published late Tuesday night, the dollar amounts Chris Campoli, Viktor Stalberg and Michael Frolik are asking for aren’t anywhere close to where the Blackhawks are looking to spend.
Rogers indicates that Campoli is looking to cash in on the spending frenzy this summer, asking for around $3M per season on his next deal. Considering the Hawks’ depth on the blue line with the additions of Steve Montador and Sean O’Donnell and the number of prospects matriculating up through the organization, the likelihood that GM Stan Bowman writes a check in that neighborhood isn’t likely.

Meanwhile, Rogers says Frolik is asking for somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.5M per season.

This number might be more reasonable, and could work in the overall structure of the team moving forward. Consider what some comparable players have been paid this summer.

On Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs gave forward Clarke MacArthur a two-year, $6.5M deal ($3.25M cap hit). MacArthur has 54 goals with three different organizations in the last three seasons and is 26 years old.

On July 1, the Philadelphia Flyers handed Jakub Voracek a one-year, $2.25M deal. In three years, Voracek has 39 goals; he is 21-years-old.

Frolik has 53 goals in his last three years between Florida and Chicago, and is only 23 years old. He also has more 20-goal seasons, two, than MacArthur, who has just one (last year). Voracek has not scored more than 16 in a season. All three were restricted free agents this summer.

Handing Frolik $2.5M per wouldn’t be outrageous considering his market value this summer.

Indeed, considering how teams spent this summer, a three-year deal at that dollar amount could make Frolik an outstanding asset on the trade market in 12 or 24 months. If he skates a full season on a line with Dave Bolland or Marian Hossa, both superior players to anyone he played with regularly in Florida in his two 20-goal campaigns, he could easily jump back to those numbers in Chicago.

Wish I was as confident as you folks. I got a bad feeling about this one. Hopefully my streak of being wrong continues.

Just doesn't sit well with me he has gone to arbitration after watching Montador walk in with a slightly bloated contract and watching all these other bloated contracts go around the league. I stated in another thread I will be expecting a 2.5 mill per for Campoli. I think that has become more and more realistic now..and me thinks this is what he wants and the team has probably offered around 1.5.

I hate this wait and see thing. I don't think anyone should be allowed raises above 1 mil per year because teams are too likely to be screwed over in this case by greedy one or two year flashes in the pan.

I don't think it's confidence---I just don't know anything and won't know anything until it plays out however it's going to. So there's really no reason for me to think the worst or worst of people yet. Could lose none of them or because the Hawks have a history of not taking on arbitration-awarded amounts could lose any combination of the 3 or lose all 3.

As for Campoli, I'd have to say if you're right and Stan has so far only offered $1.5 mil then I can actually see clear as day why that might cause a player to go to arbitration because I mean really, only a $100K increase over the $1.4 mil he just made this past season? Yeah, an Arbiter is likely to give him more than that---it's not an increase that's hard to top in the player's favor.

At least Stan has a viable defense with all these bloated contracts on other teams. Chances are, with arbitration, IF it favors the Hawks, it will likely be around $2M for Campoli which is a bit much, but its close to what I expected for him. Same for Frolik. Stalberg... I don't even want to know what he's wanting, but wow, if that little clause with Olesz were to work, I'd have to say we're really lucky there...

Either way, I'm with you in thinking that we're going to see more people from Rockford this year.

If Campoli or Stalberg get awards from an arbitrator and remain Blackhawks I will be stunned. I can't remeber any Blackhawk player gettting an arbitration award and remaining a Blackhawk. Perhaps with Stan calling the shots that will change, but I'm betting on Campoli and Stalberg playing elsewhere if it goes to the arbitrator. Frolik's only leverage is going to play in Europe and turning his back on the NHL until he's 25.
