Yeah I wasn't expecting an over 60% k rate from BJax.

He had a 38.8% K rate in AAA. Now he's facing pitchers that are much, much better.... 60% was never out of the question, and a HUGE reason why he should never have been called up.

Fangraphs has his K rate in AAA this year at 33.8% (most go by PA not AB when determinig K and BB rates), and while an increase was expected a near doubling of that rate is pretty remarkable.

I think people fluctuate between AB and PA for K-rate for some stupid reason.

In the minors (so far) BJax has 478 K in 1808 PA, or 1540 AB across all levels. That's 26.4% vs. 31% which is pretty crazy. His saving grace is that he has a good eye at the plate and can still get on base at a good clip, though that's obviously going to change if the pitchers know they can just throw stuff in the strike zone and he won't be able to do anything with it.

Well since BB rates are always determined by PA, I think it really only makes sense going by PA for K rates as well. I agree with you that there is something up with his swing that less experienced pitchers weren't able to take advantage of. We've got a pretty solid hitting coach to deal with this I just worry that he really hasn't had to deal with that much adversity getting to the bigs. He has hit really well despite the Ks at every level.

Bruce Levine chat:

Jeff (Indiana)

Is it possible the Cubs brought Jackson up to show that he isn't ready?

Bruce Levine (1:14 PM)

I can't really understand premise. It would prove that they are inept at managing the players they have. It would be a lose-lose for the player and the management group. The reason they brought him up is they felt his other tools were big-league caliber. That includes base-running, throwing, catching the ball and baseball IQ. The rest was that they were counting on their big league coaches to help Jackson with his pitch identification.

Also thinks he should've been brought up, but to get instruction and not so much to play every day.

Cubs lineup: DeJesus RF, Vitters 3B, Rizzo 1B, Soriano LF, Castro SS, Castillo C, Jackson CF, Barney 2B, Volstad P

On-the-job training for BJax it seems. Might as well since I-Cubs season is all but over and he probably needs to shake some bad habits with better coaches anyway.

It would be pretty pathetic if Volstad only gave up that one run and still lost.

Still plenty of time for him to properly shit the bed though.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
This guy is becoming the most hated pitcher on this team. He's more aggravating than even Marmol. Even Maine.

Volstad = batting practice
