Why would they sign a big money outfielder, when in theory, it's the only position where the Cubs have depth in? As of right now, they have four guys who could be starters... in Soriano, Fukudome, Bryd and Colvin. And unless Quade says Colvin is moving to first base full time, you have to pencil him in as an outfielder. Additionally, Brett Jackson will get a Sterlin Castro type look in spring training and even if he doesn't make the roster, he most likely will get a taste of the majors by the all-star break.

The theory is that he's a superstar, something the Cubs don't have. It's got some legs to it. Personally, I'd rather not sign him.

A team, trying to rebuild, and trying to cut costs, is NOT going to get into a bidding war against the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees over Carl Crawford. Crawford to Cubs has NO LEGS to it, no matter how sexy it may appear in your playstation video game.

The thought has legs to it. If anyone believes we can actually get Crawford, they are fucking Special person.

haha

I didn't mean to destroy your idea or ruin your fun, i was just being realistic. Signing guys because we have nobody thats a "name" is what we have been doing for over a decade now and it's not worked. Who's to say Colvin won't be a very good hitting OFer and whos to say Jackson won't be a Crawford?

To me, it seems like the Cubs will take a few years to see what they have, and then fill the holes with free agents when guys like Fukudome, Ramirez, Big Z go off their books.

Stats.

Colvin won't be a good hitting OFer. He'll be about average. Maybe a little better than that.

Jackson is a Jim Edmonds/Mike Cameron type player, not a Crawford type. He doesn't have the speed.

I don't know how fast Jackson is, so i don't know, you are probably right.

As for Colvin, what stats? He's had pretty solid stats in the minors thus far. Not to mention some real nice stats for a guy who was pretty much a major league virgin.

Well his OBP sucks. His SLG, where he got most of his OPS points, is due in large, to his 1/5 HR/FB rate. That won't get much better. Odds are it gets worse.

Sorry for the double post, i was listening to Mike and Mike one day on my way to work, and they had some guy from expert, i wanna say Buster Olney, and they talked about Cubs youth, Castro and Colvin, and Olney compared Colvin to Paul O'Neill. If he even gets close to his status, that is pretty damn good.

And who'd they compare Castro too?

Bruce Levine said the Cubs will have interest, but doesn't think going back in time is the best move.

Also, he sees Wood re-signing with the Yanks.
