I would like to know the plans of these candidates for Defensive Coordinator. I guess McCarthy might bring Zimmer, who is manageable. Doesn't excite me, but definitely minimally a solid B. How about Ben Johnson? Or nobody really cares about this.

Goff still struggles under pressure. I dont know the stats this year but last year he had the largest gap between qb rating in a clean pocket vs. pressured.

He's always been great in a clean pocket, even in his early years on the rams
Haven't checked the #s but that's the areas he looked most improved this year in the little I've watched him and I think it's BJs influence.

Why is that?

Something that Sweat said. After a couple weeks in Chicago, he talked about how much better the culture was than it was in Washington and how Flus has everyone playing their butts off. To me, that was an attack on Washington and Rivera, and by the way the Redskins defense was putrid.

Like I said, I love Rivera, like most do, but his better coaching days may be behind him. I would take him as GM or President.

Then why would he have wanted the Bear job last year? Can he not evaluate talent or are you saying he'd only take a gig assured of Caleb. Are you suggesting he's not a good talent evaluator? Are you just trying to find some niche not to be wrong?

I think specifically he has a thing for Caleb Williams.

The Bears had the number one overall pick last year. If he lands the job and they had fired Eberflus, He would have gotten a quarterback he wanted.

You need to listen to Ben Johnson talk about Caleb Williams. He seems to really like him as a player.

Honestly for all the stuff I've speculated on, it may just come down to Ben Johnson really liking Caleb Williams as a quarterback.

I am with you on this. I'd be open to Rivera but not with sweat there and I don't want to lose sweat even though he had a down year.

I would be fine with all 3 of them, but I think the "proven commodity" with McCarthy is a pretty big deal. Who has Johnson or Monken developed? At least with McCarthy he developed Rodgers.

In a few years if CW is still struggling, who's fault is it? If the HC is Johnson or Monken then the question is the HC not developing him correctly? If the HC is McCarthy then you know for a fact it's a CW issue.

Development of CW is a pretty big deal, McCarthy checks that box.
It's why he's still on my list. I don't care about fan questions. All have proven records but 2 of them have shown an ability to adjust their O schemes for personnel, the other is West Coast McCarthy. Johnson has made a middling QB. Goff is the 2nd highest rated starter in football, 2nd in yards , 2nd in YPA, 2st in completion %, 2nd in 20+, and it's mostly different 1st place QBs ahead of him in the various categories. Lamar holds some of those this year but the point is Goff's game and especially consistency has been significantly elevated under Johnson's tutelage.

I care a lot who the DC will be if we get a offensive HC and who the OC will be if we go with a defensive HC.

The obvious top name is Saleh who is now getting HC interviews but everyone thinks he lands back with San Fran as their DC if no HC job.

Dennis Allen is my top guy after Saleh.

Then Ron Rivera

Yea I remember that, but I contribute a lot of that to the whole Dan Snyder and NFL /Washington DC bias thing. That team went through hell for several years with the whole Redskins/Naming, Bruce Allen scandal and forcing sale of the team, . I think it was just a bad place to work for anybody.

I actually like Monken better then Johnson. I would be OK with Johnson but think he is the biggest risk out of all 3. He is just more of an unknown at this point.
I agree with you. I’ve never seen someone anointed so quickly to God status after a few years of play calling experience. To me, Johnson is the biggest risk of those 3 by a mile.

But alas, I also have a feeling that whoever the Bears pick won’t work out, while the one who went elsewhere will have a HOF coaching career.

Likely true. But i like to think that any of those 3 would have success because of caleb. If you have an elite nfl qb it covers up a lot of holes.

Since they're leaving no stone unturned and interviewing everybody, when is Singletary's interview?

That's entirely made up in your noggin. There's no evidence of that beyond him like the bear as a destination last year. Bears were ready for a run with a good leader and revised O.

It's also been reported that he didn't get the WA job because he wanted toressurect Sam Howell like he did Goff. Dude has a lot of hubris which concerns me a little but OK if he can back it up. Doesn't seem to be just the passive teacher many project him to be. For all we know, he felt he could groom Bagent and would have got the Bear to haul, LOL.

Charlie Campbell: Ben Johnson's infatuation with Drake Maye could lead him to Foxborough. The Detroit play-caller "loved" rookie quarterback Drake Maye during the 2024 pre-draft process before New England ultimately selected him third overall.

It's a big deal but hard to know right now. I could easily see the Bear playing safe and going McCarthy with Rivera as DC.
