I think Caleb is purposely playing super safe in a way to sort of manipulate his overall numbers, but the team is actually suffering because of it. He’s not throwing any interceptions because most tight throws he’s not even attempting to make. Or he purposely puts it an an area where nobody is getting to it. QB’s will sometimes put a ball in an area where their guy has like a 10% chance to make a spectacular play and the defender has like a 1% chance. Either his guy gets or or in all likelihood nobody does. He’s not even doing that though. He’s playing so safe even his guy doesn’t have a shot at it. But I think it’s by design. He’s got it in his head that he can just do that and keep his turnovers down, throw in some meaningless TD’s and voila you have respectable numbers. While in all actuality it results in no big plays and unnecessary sacks. It’s not conducive to winning football. He needs to start firing the ball in tight windows and take the negative that comes with it. The good will outweigh the bad. It’s also just a way to grow and learn. He’s playing like a game manager who doesn’t want to make any mistakes. But it’s not maximizing his potential and in the end it stunts his growth. But hey, rookie record for least amount of interceptions or whatever.
It even annoyed me during the game. Vilma or whoever it was on the broadcast asked Caleb what his main focus was and he said “not turning the ball over.” That’s such a weird answer for a QB of a 4-10 team to say in that spot. First off the clear answer is “winning games” and look where not turning the ball over and playing the way you have has gotten you. You’re 4-10. He clearly only cares about his numbers and doesn’t realize or care that he’s not really helping matters with his refusal to throw into tight windows. It’s like an NBA guy who scores 24 a game but does nothing else and doesn’t contribute to winning basketball and the team is 22-60. Empty numbers.
I‘m not saying the downfall is on him. He is down the list if we’re playing the blame game. I don’t think he’s helping though. He also gets a huge break because he is a rookie QB on a dumpster fire team and him playing more aggressive won’t turn this team around. They’d still suck. They would be better than what they are and he’d be growing as a player though.
