Read a tweet by Muskrat saying McLeod wouldn't be surprised if Baez got some work in the OF at some point. He said they just want him to be consistent and talk call up later, but it was interesting he didn't rule that out.

EL PASO, Texas - The Chicago Cubs made a series of roster moves affecting Iowa's active roster for tonight's game against the El Paso Chihuahuas at Southwest University Park. Right-handed pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. has been promoted to Triple-A Iowa. Meanwhile, left-handed pitcher Hunter Cervenka has been released.

Edwards, 23, is 2-2 with a 2.66 ERA (7ER/23.2IP) and four saves for Double-A Tennessee this season. The righty has walked 17 and struck out 36.

Edwards was named the fifth best prospect in the Chicago Cubs farm system heading into the 2015 season by Baseball America. He was acquired by Chicago from the Texas Rangers along with infielder Mike Olt and pitchers Justin Grimm and Neil Ramirez in exchange for pitcher Matt Garza on July 22, 2013.
Cervenka, 25, went 0-1 with an 11.08 ERA (16ER/13.0IP) in 12 games for Iowa this season. He walked 15 and struck out 20.

With these moves, Iowa's active roster is at 25 plus two players on the disabled list.

If the tweet is referencing the interview I read it was more a "never say never" thing but they had no plans to do so presently.

Baseball is a weird game.
Baez last 10: .257
Alcantara: .359

I think they need more time to evaluate these two players. Baez looks streaky as a hitter. Got red hot and now cooling off. Lets see how he develops. Alcantara looked like shit earlier and now is heating up. Lets see if he plane's out or if this just a surge like Baez is doing.

These are things to look at. Are they hot and cold type hitters or constant production. I don't think they need much development right now but there is some evaluation that needs to be done still.

Been saying it for awhile now that I wanted to see Baez do it for a longer period. Some took that as a slight toward Baez. I never felt it was that way. I just knew the possibility was there for players to get hot and the league to eventually catch up to them.

I've watched the last 4 games. Last night game is the only game Baez was bad. The other 3 he was robbed of a double and put good wood on almost all plate appearances and saw pitches. Baseball is a weird game because sometimes the ball doesn't fall. Baez continues the approach I saw. He will be fine.

We will see what happens. But some hitters are just like that. Go on fire for 10 days then their jets cool off and hit .250 for a month. We saw that with Sori many times.

The thing I look at is their BB%. Even if they are in a .250 slump retaining their BB% still keeps them productive in OBA. That is what bothered me with Sori. Would get into a slider in the dirt fun and would have no plate discipline at all to lay off of them.

Still I would like to see a body of work this year out of both of them just to see their tendancies as hitters. They should be on equal ground with the pitching at that level so this is a good time to judge them as hitters. Bumping them up puts them into a disavantage to the league so you really never can get a good gague on them as hitters. Also up to this point they have been developing and being around pitching that is developing. Right now they are pretty much facing pitching that is AAAA and been around the league for years.

If they can not dominate that level they have no business taking the next step.

He went 2 for 4 with a walk and a k tonight. He isn't in a slump or a streak. He is just working. His streaks are home runs. He has not been in a home run streak all year. He went 0 for 3 games. It happens. Baseball is a game of balances. The Cubs will not think about bringing him up until June 9 or 7th. I'm getting conflicting dates. But they gain a year of control and they are not going to ruin that

Now if both Baez and Alcantara get hot what happens? Alcantara just hit his 7th HR. 2 for 5. .271 BA. Baez now at .292.

Realistic there is only 1 spot on the major league team in LF.

Bubble guys. Trade etc....

Castro: .269/.297/.337
Russell: .260/.305/.455
Coghlan: .207/.282/.422

Castro's .337 SLG is really bad. Coghlan's BA blows.

Now looking at if if they made a decision like that:

Fowler CF SH
Bryant 3B RH
Rizzo 1B LH
Baez 2B RH
Montero C LH
Soler RF RH
Alcantara LF SH
Pitcher
Russell SS RH

It has potential. Now I doubt that they sell Castro this year. But it will end up either him or Baez.

They've already burned Alcantara's option year. If they want him to come up and play the bench there is essentially no cost other than potential loss of development. Then again, if you're calling him up he should be ready for the majors anyways and the development is kind of moot.

I don't like that he got a Ben Zorbrist tag this early in his career. He needs to become a vet player before playing off of the bench. I would get it if he played 7 positions and he was playing about every day giving guys games off but you have guys playing every game on the team. So bench player are more used in PH duty if anything.

So I would rather see them play him every game. I personally think he would be a strong candidate for the 9 hitter and moving Russell into the 2 hole and Bryant back down to the 4 hole. At that point it is either Castro or Baez traded. I personally would rather keep Baez.

I'm probably #1 on Alcantara's fanclub so believe me I feel you on the playing every day thing. But, I also realize the present cubs bench is an utter joke. If he's hitting he's the most easy fix to that least as far as this year goes. Maybe down the line you look to do something more with him

Only way it would work is he was on a Sub rotation. Say LF Monday, CF Tue, RF Wed, SS Thurs, 2B Fri. So more of a giving a day off guy vs a PH role. On avg teams get 1 day off a week but running this it would give a 2nd day off for these guys to keep fresher through out the season.

That makes sense to me and keeps Alcantara primed vs unused and rusty.

AAA

Baez 106 AB .292/.372/.481 5 HR
Alcantara: 140 AB .271/.335/.507 7 HR
Szczur: 78 AB .333/.386/.526

Edwards: (AAA only): 1 game 1 IP 18.00 era Walked 3 guys 0 SO. Bad first game for sure.

AA

Schwarber 143 AB .322/.453/.636 12 HR
Almora 141 AB .248/.290/.333 2 HR
Mc Kinney 54 AB .278/.316/.407 0 HR
Vogelbach 147 AB .320/.436/.497 4 HR

Schwarber should be promoted soon. He is toying with the league right now. It is to the point that he is even leaving Vogelbach behind and Vogelbach is having his best year by far.
