Honestly, there is not much out there in the 3B market unless you want to sign two of the SS and convince 1 to move there. Reality is the Cubs would be better off, imo, filling other holes and letting 3B just be moved down the list of importance. Getting either Boegy or Correa is a must and then signing Josh Bell for DH/1B insurance if/when Mervis struggles. Then it's about what to do at Catcher. I'm a fan of going in on Sean Murphy from Oakland. He's just about to start getting expensive for them, is great at framing, and has enough stick. The Cubs have chips to give for him. Just have to hope another team doesn't have better chips they are willing to give up.

The Cubs have just over 90M in room before the threshold. Figure either top SS and Bell for 50-55M. Doesn't leave much for 1 SP and 3 RP. Regardless, they need 2 bats on top of Mervis' and all the pitching they can find.

They do all three, they might not be able to add any significant arms unless they offload Happ and Gomes, which would be about 18M, or they say screw the threshold. Borgaerts and Swanson are 55-60M and Murphy is another 4M. With pitching priced where it is, the top guys are looking at 30M or more.

Still, you bring them in and have
Borgaerts 3B
Swanson SS
Happ LF
Mervis 1B
Suzuki RF
Horner 2B
Murphy C
Morel CF

I'm not even thinking about where you slot the DH, most likely Wisdom, and the Cubs offense wouldn't be too bad.

Given the other holes that the Cubs have to fill, I certainly have no qualms about giving Mervis a shot at first base. I just think you expecting Mervis and Morel at the corners to compete with Goldie and Arenado is a little bit crazy. My main concern is Morel at third he’s just not a regular third baseman that’s going to win you any games. You call him super sub only because he is versatile but you know who else was versatile and played multiple positions? David Bote. That’s not leading you to championships.
Seriously? Are you talking championship in 2023? I'm just hoping they can kick over .500 a bit.

Cubby blue kool-aid is flowing......LOL

Did he say 2023 or are you just projecting something else? Fans weren't thinking championship contender in 2015 the previous offseason but they got one. Philly was an 87 win team and the made the series this year. All he said was Morel is essentially the same as Bote and that isn't leading to a title.

No. Not at all. I am not talking about winning a WS in 2023.

I am talking about adding players who you can win championships with eventually, this off season when they're available. And not kidding yourself into thinking you're going places with Morel as a starting 3rd baseman.

But if we're talking as a stopgap since no 3rd basemen are on the market, I suppose that's different. But fans here talk him up as an above average player simply because he was a surprise.

On the subject of the SS on the FA market, I saw tweets declaring the Cubs in on each of the remaining three within ten minutes.

Plus the one posted above claiming they could try to sign two.

Tis the season.......hopefully we don't have to wait too long to find out.

I think you mean fan....the same guy that was selling Schwindel as the next coming. Morel is a nice piece if used properly ....I think Ross pushed most of the right buttons with him last year.

Agreed. On both counts. One fan in particular at least. And I do like Morle as a piece. Just not as a "don't get a star because we have him" piece.

Man signing 2 SS would be kind of nuts, not sure how I feel about that. But it makes sense with what their system has at SS and how much time it will take a guy like Hernandez to get here.

But it would mean spending less on CF and starting pitching, which tells me they are more in the trade market for those two.

No way the cubs sign 2 of the shortstops this offseason. They do have some young IF prospects that will be coming up in a couple years. Loggjamming the left side of the infield for the next decade doesn’t make sense IMO

Meh, the MI prospects we got are a good bit away. If they did, Boegy moving to third wouldnt hamstring qnything since we really have no one who projects to third. Swanson at short may, but it depends on what kind of deals he is receiving. The Cub got the ok from Ricketts to spend to make them a contender which is where I think this scenario came from. I dont see it happening but the Rangers shocked everyone last year by doing it.

So Xander is willing to move to 3rd, but you can’t move a MI prospect to 3rd?!

I’ll smoke what you’re smoking lol

Ya. Both seems a bit off. If Jed buys one guy it should be Correa. He had a plat glove 2 years ago and his O is top of the heap.

I would roll with Mevis. Let Wisdom soak some PA at 1B if he struggles with Morel at 3B on those days.

DH tbh they could let Mag do that for all I care. Toss a contact bat in the line up with out killing the D.

Pitching Cubs should target Tallon or Senga. Cubs already have a Japanese following and should grow. Not a bad investment.

Cubs would be knocking on 90 as long as Hendricks gets over 150 IP and has less off games than on. Steele and Hayden I feel good about opening week.

Boras went on record saying he would not move off SS. I have seen nothing to counter this.
