They will be adding more pieces. Still need a first baseman (Mancini?) and catcher.

If that rumor has any truth behind it.

Happ -> Jays for Danny Jansen and a prospect. (Addison Barger would be choice 1) That opens up LF for Davis opening day.

To me it makes sense going forward.

CSF77 - By the standard you put out there, every team in baseball except the Marlins should have payrolls of 180M or more. Not saying you're wrong. But maybe the 2 billion evaluation would be a better line. But there are many teams not putting up respectable roster because they'd rather make the money.

Cubs are at 3.8 B value. Their revenues are most likely over 500M per year. They can afford to open a piggy bank.

I would love a trade like this, even though I love Happ.

I would only do it if Barger is in on the deal. He is a LH 3B/SS that made it to AAA last year.

It changes the dynamic of the team next year.

LF Davis
CF Bellenger. (PCA Tenn-Iowa)
RF Suzuki
3B Barger
SS Swanson
2B Hoerner
1B Mervis
C Janson/Gomez
DH Wisdom

So that trade by default takes care of all Cubs needs. To the point that Jed could send over a lower prospect to facilitate.

I agree. I want the Cubs to open up the wallet and get top end guys. They don't have any real excuse. I wish they could raid the Dodgers systems to get the people they have to find and develop players so the Cubs have a farm that keeps on putting out players when they have to move on. There's no reason they don't have a Top 10 scouting and development team.

They could sign Conforto as a stop gap.

Detroit has a SS they may be willing to trade. We could put him at 3rd. $20 million per year, but under contract for 6 more years. :)
I had to dislike this post. There's nothing I'd hate more than being stuck with baez contract. Loved him and hope for the best for him but have no faith he'll return to his old form

It wasn't a serious proposal. We'd set a record for K's by the left side of the infield. (But the D would work.)

At this point, the D doesn’t work really either. Baez was pretty bad defensively last year. 26 errors, a career high. Even the glove is deteriorating quickly as he ages

I'd take Baez as a signing or a Detroit bailout on him but I wouldn't give up assets in a trade for him. Emotional guy who is probably kicking himself for signing with the Tigers, no matter what they paid him....he's stuck there now. 183 K's, a .207 avg in 469 ABs for Wisdom.....147, .237 in 555 ABs for Baez, no question between those two. After what we all know about him from his time here.....I would guess his uptick in errors most likely came from lack of interest=lower concentration. Plus he'd be playing 3B here....totally different dynamic.

Regardless.....it's not gonna happen anyway.

Rumors are we are heavy on Mancini, would be nice to see him return to .850 Ops form.

They have that. Morel. Far cheaper.

I think with Javy it's focus. A lot of his errors are on throws.

I had another thought on the Swanson signing.... if mlb are getting rid of the shift his defense is probably bigger than we are estimating. Like defense has always been a fringe skill that is over looked by fans but can provide a big punch of value. But the shift had made some of that value disappear because it was easier to mask bad defenders. If the shift goes away cubs having 2 really solid guys up the middle should be big.

What would you think of Brandon Drury to possibly play 3B or be a RHB versus lefties and play 1B on a short term deal, say 2-3Y/8M AAV?

Javy loves the spotlight and excels in it. He has always been an emotions player and to an extent Willy was as well. Put them on a team where you dont care and you never get the same results.
