Apparently the key to being a good front office person is honesty.

People fail to realize that a front office position requires a lot of "empty rhetoric". I wouldn't really call it dishonest, but when people try to claim that what is said is absolute truth, then they need to take a step back and realize that a GM could never ever say they are going to suffer a few bad seasons to be good for 10. So they say other things to sugar coat it. That is all the commentary is on "sacred" really is.

I'd say that perhaps its not empty rhetoric so much as there's not a ton you can do when you're in a poor situation. Take the Yankees for example. They've tried to buy their way back into competition and it's not done enough for them for the second year. It's the old Kenny Rodgers song. You got to know when to hold em and know when to fold em.

In the case of the last few years, they have been utter shit to start the season which killed any chance they had from there. However, it's possible that they would have been more aggressive if they had better start. Or maybe not. It's hard to say. What's annoying is when people act like they threw away a winning hand.

Empty Rhetoric and lying are two different animals. You can talk about the need to rebuild. You can discuss the needs of the team. You can talk about the end game. But you don't fabricate lies.

beckdawg, you said:

Honesty is not the key but is definitely a key in basically any walk of life - President of Operations of the Cubs to boot.

Also for what it's wroth cubs den brought up a good point in regard to Bryant and why not to bring him up now. He's not on the 40 man roster and as such putting him on the roster clogs up a slot. That might not seem like a big deal but at this point in the season you're wanting to save some of them for protecting players from the rule 5 draft. I felt this paragraph said it particularly well talking about Marco Hernandez.

What if, for example, Marco Hernandez takes a step forward in AA with his offense? A slick fielding SS with even an average bat has value on the market. But if you lose that player then you lose that value as well. A good organization is not in the business of giving away value for nothing in return.

This isn't a case of choosing between two players and deciding who is more valuable. Kris Bryant is obviously more valuable than Marco Hernandez. You aren't sacrificing Bryant for the sake of Hernandez, you are sacrificing one month's worth of Bryant in a non-contending season for Hernandez's career in the organization and/or potential future trade value.

Great move supporting a liar. Next thing I'll hear is that you voted for Obama in 2012

Thanks, I think it is a great move to support the man who has assembled one of the best farm systems in club history.

But the main thing with you is that you lack reading comprehension skills.

"Every opportunity to win is sacred," Epstein said. "It's sacred to us inside the organization and it should be sacred to the fans as well. They deserve our best efforts to do what we can to improve the club, and put the club in position to succeed in any given season."

He says opportunities to win are sacred. Not a lie.
He said it is sacred inside the organization. Not a lie.
It should be sacred to the fans. Not a lie.
They deserve best efforts to improve. Not a lie.
Put the club in position to succeed in any given season. Maybe a bit of a lie. But the shape that the Cubs were in when he took over, I don't see how anyone could have turned that shit heap into a winner, without turning into a Yankees/Dodgers esque team. We knew this would not happen though because in the same press conference Theo said:

"We won't rest until there is a steady stream of talent" going to Wrigley Field from the minors.

He was pretty clear that the farm system and development would be a priority.

"We're going to build the best baseball operation we can. We're going to change the culture. Our players are going to change the culture along with us in the major league clubhouse. We're going to make building a foundation for sustained success a priority. That will lead to playing October baseball more often than not. Once you get in in October there's a legitimate chance to win the World Series."

Seriously, I support this guy? I'm a fucking idiot.

You're an idiot for thinking Randy Wells was a Cy Young contender, Alfonso Soriano was a good defensive outfielder, Matt Garza was the best pitcher in baseball.

Just because you think Theo Epstein is a good GM/president of baseball ops. Doesn't make you smart.

What organization does that to their star prospect that is re-writing history books at every level he plays at?

Rodon isn't "re-writting history", but the White Sox didn't call up Rodon for September because they want the extra year of control. Its the right thing to do in both instances.

I think the guy Brett was referring to was Kris Bryant in terms of rewriting records.

Give me a fucking break, its the same principle. Team doesn't want to lose time on a top player so they hold them down in the minors longer. The point is that you're crucifying the Cubs (kind of like Jesus, except he is make believe) when the Sox are doing the same thing and I haven't seen you post anything negative about them.

Humour me. How is what the Sox are doing any different than the Cubs? Please tell me, I'm stupid.

And LOL at Fisch hiding behind "liking comments".

For one, the Cuban FA the White Sox signed played immediately.

The Cubs' Cuban FA took almost 3 seasons to arrive.
