Rumblings suggest Chris Volstad. I guess that's about fair, but if they're not giving us anything of real value I'd rather they just help the Cubs save more money

Or we could just go to extras a lot, that'll get people throwing some innings!

Can't find the exact rumor, but reading the comments on the BleacherNation article has reports coming out of Miami that suggest Matt Dominguez could be in play too which would make this deal a huge win even if they pay all of Z's salary next year.

The Marlins' 40 man roster is full, so I'd imagine they'd be dealing a player in order to make room for Zambrano's corpse. I mean, hell, I'd take ANYTHING for him. If Theo wants, I'll drive up to Chicago and help pack his bags and even take him over to the airport.

Volstad... yuck.

Interesting blurb on fangraphs about Volstad makes me think this is another excellent buy low candidate that Theo seems to be stockpiling this offseason:
Chris Volstad had a breakout year by SIERA and xFIP standards, but of course all three luck metrics conspired against him to prevent his ERA from agreeing. Volstad primarily appears on this list because of the decline in SwStk5 he experienced last season. However, in 2009, he posted a 7.4% mark, so this year did not truly represent any real skill gains. Volstad showed some nice control growth and is a heavy ground ball pitcher, though his below average strikeout rate will limit his fantasy upside. However, one of these years he will either learn how to strand runners better or simply get luckier and he will generate a nice profit for NL-Only owners.

Ask him for a jersey for me.

If the Volstad rumor is true, that takes care of the 40-man situation.

Same reception he's gotten when he's pitched in Wrigley the last 2 years...

No guarantees that Dominguez is involved. A lot more chatter is suggesting that Volstad is in the deal than Dominguez at this point. I still haven't tracked down an actual link to that rumor, but just thought I would pass it on here. Volstad on the other hand isn't great, but is hardly nothing either. He has a great groundball rate and decent control, and could actually do well here with a middle infield that has more range than a light pole.

MLBTR blurb was updated. Sounds like the Cubs eat all the money minus the league minimum to get something back.

Or what WFH said :D

So they added salary when they dumped Zambrano? I figured they would just have to make it a wash, but isn't Volstad due a raise in arby this year*?

*Finally read the whole mlbtraderumor update and saw that he is expected to earn 2.6 million in arbitration this year. Would be nice if they at least got out of this trade in the same financial shape they went into it.

Marlins Agree To Acquire Carlos Zambrano
By Mike Axisa [January 4 at 6:33pm CST]

The Marlins and Cubs have agreed to a trade that will send Carlos Zambrano to Miami for Chris Volstad, reports Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago (Twitter links). The trade is still pending physicals. Levine says the Cubs will pay $18MM of Zambrano's $15MM salary.

lulz. There's over-paying, then there's that.
