So they added salary when they dumped Zambrano? I figured they would just have to make it a wash, but isn't Volstad due a raise in arby this year?

I don't actually know, just based on the article it sounded to me like they just ate Z's salary and got Volstad back though.

lulz. There's over-paying, then there's that.

15 out of 18 million makes way more sense though for the Cubs. It makes it about a wash in salaries, and the Cubs dump Zambrano for a guy that was a non-tender candidate.

Cubs eating $17.2M, get Volstad whose 25 and salary controlled for 3 years. he's been awful but still young enough to turn around

I feel like we are committing robbery.

We are trading a disgruntled head case with declining skills and an 18 million dollar price tag for a young pitcher.

We will pay for $15M of the $18M owed to Z.

This is a win for both teams.

Florida is taking a 3 mil flyer on a guy that could be a #2 or #3 starter if Guillen can get through to him. If he has a blow up, the Marlins just cut him. And the Cubs get something out of it and remove a horrible presence in the clubhouse. Win/Win

Still have to like the opportunity to flip an expensive pitcher that has been declining for a younger, cost controlled pitcher that has some nice (nice is perhaps a stretch but some at least some postive) peripherals is a win. Not getting any savings between Zambrano and Volstad though makes this deal pretty much a wash for this year though.

I would be hesistant to call Volstad or Wood (Travis that is) a core, but it is nice that the team has gone out and gotten younger. Perhaps these guys (Wood, Volstad and you could throw Wells in the mix as well) could surprise with improved defense behind them and some better luck. Nothing I am going to be betting on but at least there is a possibility that these guys might do better next year given their ages.

its atleast helps make a foundation of solid rotation pitching for the next few years

I like this trade. Even though the Cubs are paying for 5/6ths of Zambrano's remains, at least we get a young pitcher who has struggled, but has plenty of time for a turnaround.

Indeed we have a foundation. We have spots 4-5, in terms of talent level, taken care of. Now we just need to get pitchers 1-3. :troll:

That's about all you can ask right now. The Cubs had almost no assets to trade away to rebuild so you're not going to get much of a rotation cobbled together, with or without Matt Garza at this point.
