Per @ESPNBruceLevine, #Cubs have "talked about" RPs Jason Grilli (age 36, career ERA+ 102) and Kyle Farnsworth (age 36, career ERA+ 102).

At least Kyle Farnsworth can beat the shit out of people trying to charge the mound.

Jesse Rogers is the new Cubs beat guy for ESPN Chicago and did a chat today:

http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chicago/chat/_/id/46341

Dave (Chicago)

How can someone cost too much for the Cubs? They are overvaluing prospects...trade Baez and Soler for Stanton, sign Hamilton and Greinke and let's win now.

Jesse Rogers (2:21 PM)

It's not the craiest notion, but isn't their plan right now. They want to build a surplus of talent and be able to use that as an asset moving forward. That route you mentioned would be a quicker fix and they're simply not interested in that.

Dave (Chicago)

The Cubs payroll was $144 million a few years ago....what the heck is it now? $50-60 million? I just don't get how the front office has brainwashed the Cubs fans into the notion that losing is OK if they simply collect prospects. Does anyone else see the lunacy in this approach?

Jesse Rogers (2:31 PM)

It's called rebuilding, something that hasn't happened on the North Side in forever. Simple as that.

Dave is an angry and impatient fellow. Also lots of stuff about the 3B situation.

Update: 5:00 p.m - The Cubs told Carlos Marmol last night that he will open the 2013 as their closer. I would have to think, if the right offer comes along, he'll be gone. The Cubs also told him, that he could be a trade deadline trade.

Day 3 of the Winter Meetings kicked off today with no moves from the Chicago Cubs front office. As of right now, the Cubs side still has been very quiet. Even the rumors haven't been here much as what we would have expect. The biggest news so far at the meetings for the Cubs is the announcement of Jim Deshaies as their replacement for Bob Brenly. But here's the latest from the slow rumor mill:

*The Cubs have had plenty of interest in closer Carlos Marmol and OF Alfonso Soriano, according to Bruce Levine. Take it with a grain of salt as it is from Levine, he's been off the past few years and no one else has reported interest in either of the players. I just hope the Cubs aren't overvaluing them. If they're, both players will be on the Cubs roster come the 2013 season.

*The Cubs search for a 3B is still on, but to no luck. The Cubs had interest in Jeff Keppinger and Yunel Escobar. But Keppinger signed with the Chicago White Sox today and Escobar was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday.

*The Cubs did have interest in OF Jason Bay, but he's is now off the board too. The Seattle Mariners snagged him in today.

*The Boston Red Sox are reportedly shopping OF Jacoby Ellsbury. The Cubs are believe to have interest in Ellsbury, but Buster Olney states there is no match between the 2 teams. The Red Sox would want top prospects for him or major league players in exchange for Ellsbury. Of which the Cubs won't and cannot make.

*The Cubs have interest in RP Jason Grilli and he could make a decision on a new team today. He drove down to Nashville today and is ready for a new contract. The Cubs interest in 'genuine'. The Pirates could be the front-runner for Grilli, though.

*The Cubs have interest in reuniting with old ex-Cub RP Kyle Farnsworth, but we don't know how much.

*The Cubs also have interest in IF Yunisky Betancourt, but many believe for a minor-league deal and he will come off the bench. But we don't know much on Betancourt too.

*In surprising news, recent non-tender Ian Stewart is drawing good attention on the open market. The Cubs have hope to re-sign him after non-tendering him, but it may be harder than first thought. The New York Yankees are one team looking at Stewart.

That's the latest from the rumor mill from your Chicago Cubs!

Other MLB news:
*The Chicago White Sox signed 3B Jeff Keppimger to a 3-year deal worth 12 million.
*The Arizona Diamondbacks signed IF Eric Chavez to a 1-year contract.
*The Baltimore Orioles signed OF Nate McClouth to a 1-year deal worth 2 million.
*The Seattle Mariners signed OF Jason Bay to a 1-year contract.
*The Los Angeles Angels have signed RP Sean Burnett to a 2-year contract with a club option.
*The Detroit Tigers have traded LHP Andre Oliver to the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor-league catcher Ramon Cabrera.

To be honest, this Winter Meetings has been more boring than in the past years. Barely any trades and not big free agent signings.

We will actually hear news on a Cubs addition tomorrow as the Rule V draft takes place. Also, tomorrow is the final day of the Winter Meetings and usually concludes around noon.

1 year for 3 million seems a little steep but I am bummed we missed out on Chavez.

Gordon W - nothing to the Bentancourt story. He called it a bad rumor.

I belive it if iit's for a minor league deal - spring invitation and to come off the bench.

#Cubs did talk to free agents Keppinger, Chavez, who both signed today. Betancourt not in mix. No 3B yet. Hoyer says: "We'll keep looking"

The Cubs have offers out to free agents. But Hoyer can't say to who and when they will know.

Also, the Cubs have been approach by teams in regard to their 2nd pick in tomorrow's Rule V draft.

Cubs probably wise to keep the #2 pick unless the other team offers much more in cash or prospects...which I doubt.

So I'd expect the Cubs to keep the pick.

I mean, how much is a Rule 5 pick worth? There are some interesting names but there's no Josh Hamilton. Back then the Cubs probably should've asked the Reds for even more money before agreeing to the swap though.

Cash or a low prospect.

That's why I think the Cubs will keep the pick and take a gamble on a player.

Just an FYI:

7:56pm: Dempster's agent has talked to the Cubs about a possible return to Chicago, reports Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com. Though the Cubs have not made an offer, money and length of contract was discussed. Dempster has two and three-year offers on the table, writes Levine, with the Royals and Brewers showing the most interest. Levine sees a no-trade as a potential obstacle to Dempster returning to the Cubs.

Doubt it happens, but due diligence from both sides.

We were thinking they try to grab a middle infielder that they could plug in at 3B since they don't seem too keen about bringing Ian Stewart back right now. I'd be surprised if some other team pays Stewart oodles of $$ to start for them though.

Muskat has a blurb about Scott Boras:

Super agent Scott Boras held court outside the media room at the Winter Meetings on Wednesday, and touched on a variety of topics. Asked whether this was a unique offseason and the seemingly strong spending was indicative of a change in the market, he said:

“We’ve seen franchise values go from $700 to $800 million for premium markets to where they’re now worth $2.5 to maybe $4 billion. Owners have made in franchise valuation, $2 to $2.5 billion. We’ve also seen a record revenue stream come to baseball from two media sources, in the fact that we’ve got a new TV contract where each club is going to get $25 million more per team per year. And almost any club in baseball, before they sell a ticket, off the general fund, revenue sharing and others, even the bottom teams, they’re going to have well over $110 to $120 million to spend, add on their ticket, concessions and other values. It’s really kind of a baseline where everybody’s at $180 million and above to begin. You also have the value of regional media rights, which we’ve seen in L.A. and we’re going to see in other markets like Chicago.

“If you look at certain owners, you have to say the Ricketts family for example, they’re the Ameritrade family. Well, I see why. They bought something for $800 million that’s now worth probably $2.5 billion and they have a new TV contract to negotiate in 2014 off the basis of what’s going on in Los Angeles with a $6 billion TV rights deal. And Philadelphia which may be equivalent to that, and then following, Chicago. Many of these teams can be great economic goliaths, and their owners have made very wise decisions buying those teams in the early 2000s.”

Translation: "You people are rich, buy a Rafael Soriano already!"
