Credit where credit is due.

Ross has noticed Mastrobouni is having competent major league at bats consistently and has put him in the lineup.

He doesn’t get many right, but props for getting this one right.

You can’t complain about resting veterans and then complain about not resting veterans lol

Either you want to rest vets or not, can’t have it both ways
Yeah, when every Sunday he rests ,everybody good and plays a bullshit lineup versus when one guy needs one day off. Yeah, it’s a major major major difference.

He’s playing because of injuries to others.

Assad - great as a starter
Assad - great in long relief

Ross felt the last 6 games of the season was the perfect time to try him in a new role, high leverage inning guy.

Then Smyly? Haha

Another humiliating game from David Ross in the bullpen.

Season likely over.

Ross is as responsible as Seiya for this loss. His handling, or mishandling of the bullpen has been wretched to say the least! No way to bring Assad in and just use him for one inning. Assad did give up a home run, but he doesn't give up many.
Worst loss in many years, maybe since Bartmann! You just can't blow a 6-0 lead with the playoffs on the line, no matter who you're playing or where!

Agreed. The last week of the season is not the time to experiment with a young pitcher in a brand new rule.

Merriweather should have been asked for two innings tonight rather than using Assad or Smyly.

Oh well. We have a dumb manager. What do we do about it now?

Still think the best method is starter for 5 then a guy like Assad for 3.

Jed should target guys like this.

On Hendricks. From the other post. Uhm there is a write up on MLBTR on Hendricks and his resergence. It might be worth a flyer to bridge to Horton

He pretty much owned during the series. He should get a cup of Joe in Iowa. Jed has the next ace on the cusp.

TBH Jed could skip AAA with Horton. His stuff is that good. Keep him on a pitch count limit and use F/A for pitching depth

The weakness has been the middle innings. Jed needs to focus resources that way.

The Cubs thru out of the year proving they cannot hit or pitch when the game is on the line.. Sad

Talent. Cubs are thin after the starter goes out.

Add to it Atl is the top team in baseball and Steele kept them quiet for 5 innings. Having a stronger middle inning squad that would have been a easy choice to get a fresh arm that can get to the 8th inning.

Losing like this is not a bad thing. It gives Jed data to work with when he has to spend on F/A.

Key needs are 3B and 1B. Then deepen the talent from the starter to the closer

So I doubt that he will go all in on one guy. There are needs vs a need going on.

That said it is not a bad idea to get Horton into the rotation in spring. That let's Jed cut Hendricks. This drops 14.5M from payroll.

That is equal to 2 proven middle relief arms that can stabilize the 6th and 7th innings.

Other than that I would expect some trades to address other issues.

Off day Monday and Cubs have a 6-0 lead.

They lost 7-6 with Merryweather not throwing a single pitch despite being fully rested.

That’s humiliating.

If cubs win a World Series this year, Ross gets a 10 year extension and his job for life.

Instead, he is going to oversee one of the worst collapses in cubs history and we should just pat him on the butt and say get them next year according to some.

You keep him

This team wasn’t supposed to be a playoff team and here they are going into the final 2 weeks right in the thick of it

Ross has been great at handling the bullpen and pitching staff.

I’m not sure why anyone would be questioning his job security at this point, even if the cubs collapse and miss the playoffs

at the time Counsell was not available
Counsell was heavily sought after and his contract was expiring and it was obvious to those with a clue that he could be had at a price since the Brewers couldn’t match a big market club’s offer.

That being said, Ross forced the Cubs into this upgrade with decisions like batting Morel 3rd in the most important games of the season and watching him strikeout with runners on 3rd and less than 2 outs multiple times.
