We just need people to step up in big games. Rose can't do it himself.

I agree everyone needs to step up. But Derrick handles the ball 90% of the time on the court. In the Heat series, Derrick had the mentality of looking for his shot. When he's in score first mode, the rest of the guys are not getting the ball in favorable places where they can do damage.

Here is Derrick's best game as a Bull, IMO. Two months ago in Milwaukee. Derrick had 30 pts on only 17 shots. He shot 53% and had as many assists 17 as shots taken. When he did shoot, it was a high percentage shot. He wasn't out of control, or forcing a bunch of jumpers.

Everyone stepped up in this game, we shot 50% as a team. Teammates got shots that were good shots because Rose was able to get them the ball where they like on the floor. He could not play the PG position any better than this game.

Im pretty sure everybody in this thread has already explained the fact the other teammates need to step their game up and not just by Rose passing the ball to them. It's actually pretty simple: If other players can't create offense on their own then it's not that hard to defend them.

The only other creator on our team is Carlos Boozer. He is (or was before his toe injury anyway) a guy who you could throw the ball into the low block, back away and let him work his man. You're right, no one else on the team can make their own shot.

So that's the problem. We have a team full of finishers, but only 2 creators. The guys on our team can't step up by creating offense, they can only step up by finishing. If you're saying Derrick doesn't need to pass the ball more, other guys need to just step up and make some offense, how can they make offense when it's not who they are?

Someone has to initiate the playmaking--the Point Guard. If we want these guys around Derrick to step up, they can step up by finishing. Which requires Derrick giving up the ball. Whether that's shooters like Bogans, Deng or Korver finishing with a three from a Rose drive and kick, or big men like Boozer, Taj, Noah or Asik getting loose on the pick-and-roll, getting fed near the rim and finishing strong.

Are you saying Derrick doesn't pass the ball?

I know you don't really think that.

If you watched the Heat series, you saw he didn't pass enough. Unless you're a complete homer, any Bulls fan can admit that. But don't take my word for it. Here are some reactions to Rose's performance in the playoffs.

And if that doesn't convince you, all you have to do is look at the box score. In Game 6 Derrick Rose shot the ball 29 times, compared to 32 shots from the other 4 guys in the starting lineup COMBINED. So to answer you're question, do I think Rose doesn't pass the ball, the answer is a resounding YES!

Quoting from the article:

There were times in the playoffs Jordan, at 6-foot-6, could score against any scheme and win without much help. But this particular time isn’t suited for a point guard going against a Heat team committed to making Rose “finish over three or four outstretched hands,” as Dwyane Wade said. The more Rose tries going one-on-five against a defense that’s like a Miami vise, the closer the Bulls will come to trailing the series 2-1.

For the Bulls to get back on top, they don’t need Rose to be more like Mike. They simply need Rose to be more like Rose.

They need Rose to attack more often when overmatched point guard Mike Bibby guards him. They need Rose to make smarter, quicker decisions moving the ball when the Heat overplay the pick-and-roll. And when James or Wade switches onto Rose in crunch time, when playoff legacies are made, he needs to force the action with enough time on the shot clock to create good looks for him or the open man.

For Rose, taking over ideally means taking turns hitting big shots.

More quotes from the articles:

Derrick Rose is being a bigger playoff ball hog than Kobe Bryant ever was

ESPN Stats and Information released this intriguing statistic: On 25 possessions, Rose never passed after crossing halfcourt or receiving an inbounds pass. On those, Rose shot 7-for-22 and drew three fouls, scoring 21 points.

On the other hand, Rose after passing went 5-for-10 and scored 13 points and assisted on 22 other points.

In short, Derrick Rose isn’t even trying to be a point guard in this year’s playoffs. He has turned into Allen Iverson. Allen Iverson averaged 29.7 points and 6.0 assists in eight playoff seasons. He averaged 26.5 shots per game over that time.

Is that what the Bulls want? I don’t think so. I think they want the Derrick Rose they had during the regular season, not this new shoot-till-you-drop playoff version. The regular-season Derrick Rose shot 19.7 times per game. That was third in the entire league, as compared to only eighth in assists, but it was acceptable.

The best shooter on your team should get about 20 shots a game. Even if that shooter is your point guard. But 30 shots per game is Michael Jordan territory.

Derrick Rose is many, many things, but not even the youngest MVP in NBA history is Michael Jordan. He needs to stop acting as if he is.

You keep posting meaningless shit. Rose "hogs" the ball because that's the way the Bulls offense is currently designed. 2/5ths of the Bulls starting lineup is below average on offense. Someone is going to have to pick up those shots etc. If the Bulls get a true #2 guard his usage rate will go down and he won't seem so ball hoggish. Rose won an MVP as a "ball hog" and it finally became an issue when the Bulls ran into a team with 3 elite to very good NBA players on the same team. IMO this series told us more about the Bulls short comings as a team than it did that Rose needs to learn to play differently.

Yeah, you're right. The MVP needs to change the way he plays the game.

SMH.

I didn't see an MVP performance in the ECF, I saw a low efficiency scorer, making terrible decisions, who looked a lot of times in over his head.

9-29 FG
8-27 FG
8-19 FG
7-23 FG
10-22 FG

Why would we want to change that? Why would we want to improve on a MVP who scores 117 points on 121 shots. Why would Miami want anyone else to shoot the ball when D. Rose guarantees he'll shoot a terrible percentage?

I won't pretend to have read every word of this thread...but honestly, how much help did Rose have this season? We consistently watched Korver, Boozer, et al. miss wide open shots that Rose created for them. He took 20+ shots in games b/c he was the only threat to score.

Rose wasn't at fault in the Finals. Miami's defense was just too damn good for the Bulls and it is simple as that.

The bad shooting numbers was the result of him attempting to do what we needed him to do: pull a miracle out of his ass.

But yeah. Let's irrationally blame him when it doesn't happen.

I didn't read a damn word of this thread because it would be pointless. The premise was off-base.

I agree with the starter of this thread. Rose needs to get people involved. A lot of people don't want to say anything negative about Rose, which is fine, but he needs to pass the ball. Miami only has three guys, but LeBron and Wade kept passing it to Haslem, Bibby, and Chalmers. Those guys aren't all that at all, but he kept going to them. Rose didn't go to Boozer or Deng or even Brewer when they were open. Cj Did and the ball was moving and that was the only times Korver made shots.

The premise of this isn't off at all. I just think some people want to blame everybody but the person who has the ball most. Rose just need to trust his teammates more. It will come in time. But him forcing the action was counterproductive against the Heat.

I also don't want to hear that the guys aren't any good. They are in the NBA for a reason and it wasn't a fluke that they won 62 games.

They won 62 games because they are a team built to win in the regular season. They have plenty of depth to use to beat Bucks/Pacers/Suns of the league. Rose doesn't have the offensive power he needs as teammates. He is the only player who can create offensive for himself and others and they depend on him for that. The Heat defense was too good and cut off passing lanes for Rose and contested him around the basket.

Thibodeau is also to blame. The guy needs to mix it up and run plays FOR Rose sometimes. They can't trap Rose off of the ball. But when he dribbles the ball up from the top everytime, the Heat can trap him at will and the best case scenario would be somebody besides Rose trying to create something off of the dribble. Worst case- turnover and Miami dunk.

I agree thibs needed to let Deng or Brewer bring up the ball sometimes. But when you are a defensive minded team, you are built to win in the post season. Rose didn't trust his teammates in the playoffs and only a few games did he give them a chance and they came through. 4th Quarter game 5, Ronnie Brewer was initiating the offense and the Bulls were up by 12 with the Heats big three out there. But soon as it got down to crunch time, Rose took over and never looked for a pass. That was the problem. Ronnie Brewer can beat Wade off the dribble, he was doing it all 4th quarter.

But anyways it happened. It was a great learning experience for both the team and Thibs. Defensively, we had enough to beat Miami, offensively we came up short. Hopefully we can keep Rasual Butler because he can defend, shoot, and create his own shot. I also hope we can get a guy who can lead the bench when it comes to scoring because that will enable Deng to rest and maybe that player, hopefully its Marshon Brooks, can even close out games and become that other scoring threat everyone talks about the team needing. But the trust Rose has in the guys in the regular season, has to be carried over to the playoffs.

After the Bulls were eliminated Rose should have ran to the locker room, taken the MVP trophy, found LeBron and said "Here you go. I was borrowing this for a couple weeks but this is clearly yours."

LeBron James has to be the only one to ever lose the MVP before the season began.

Derrick Rose is the MPP (Most Popular Player) but definitely not the most valuable.

Can you imagine in your wildest dreams Michael Jordan or Larry Bird saying "This guy is dominating me."

LeBron is the most valuable and just because he had "The Decision" special shouldn't have cost him the MVP.

Ridiculous.

Yes, because value = how good of a player you are.

Brilliant.
