Its just not low BA. its also low OBP, HR total not good enough for that low of BA, its the fact he overated at 3B as i have proven. I dont think he sucks at 3B but i think people act like he a gold glover and he is not. Not even close. He prolly avg to a bit above avg. Thats it. Nothing to make it where he should be playing everday just cause of his glove like Sveum has said. He just a shitty MLB 3B. Honestly shouldnt even be in the league.

Who should be playing over Stewart right now? Vitters a guy that is just now starting to hit at AAA? Clevenger whose batting average is dropping like a rock since getting everyday playing time and his OBP is now just a shade over Ian Stewart? Jeff Baker or Joe Mather?

That is the point, d3a. So far this year it hasn't worked out with Stewart. I know this confirms everything you believed going into the season. But complaining about it doesn't change the fact that he is the best option to play at this point. At the end of the year, it will be evaluated by smarter people than us.

I say Mather right now. He gives team better bat. DEF will go down a bit but his bat will make up for it. I can see Mather hitting .250 10 HR. Stewart can barely tough .200

I am done trying to explain why they are playing Stewart at this point. If you really think playing a 29 year old journeyman over a 27 who has hit in the big leagues whether you want to admit it or not is better for this team because he might hit better than there is nothing I can say that will make senese.

THis is 3 again repeat 3 straight years Stewart has sucked. Yes he hit 15+ bombs but it was in COL. Comes to a point where he will become a journey man. Mather has much of a chance of becoming an productive player much as Stewart. That chance is like 5% but my point is you play the most productive player now. That player is Mather.

Yeah because the game or two that playing the so much more productive Mather is going to matter so much this year.

At the least they should probably be platooned. Since the Cubs suck they should give both enough time to show that they can figure it out. Sveum has the added pressure (sort of) of having to win as many ball games as he can with this group, so he should play the more productive guy at every position that he can. He probably also has a mandate from above to give certain players their allotment of plate appearances for development purposes. Arguing about playing Stewart over Mather, though, is like trying to figure out if you'd rather drink cyanide or strychnine

Stewart was a 23 or 24 y/o i be more ok. But he is only 2 yrs younger then Mather. This is his so called prime years. How that working out?

Seriously I am done trying to explain it. Playing a 29 year old who has never hit in the big leagues is certainly going to get us to the playoffs quicker

Nothing going to get this team to the playoffs in the next 3 yrs. Thats not the issue. I shouldnt have to watch a 27 y/o 3B who cant hit is weight. I want to see the player who will be the most productive at that position. Stewart is not that guy. Right now Mather is the better player. Yes Mather is not a good player. But thats how bad this team is right now. Mather > Stewart

Really that is the only issue that matters to me. Whether you like it or not Stewart has far more upside than Mather, and that is the only thing that matters at this point.

I agree with this, but given Sveum's position, he has to win as much as possible anyway so he should probably just platoon the two.

Thats not fun either. But right now Mather better player. So he deserves to play. As a fan thats all you can ask is your manager to put the best lineup out he can. Stewart in a lineup does not do that

I changed my post because I should stick to what I've said. No player has ever gotten better at this age or had his performance affected by wrist injuries. And so D3A is right we ought to DFA Stewart right now because it makes this team so much better to be playing Joe Mather.
