Jay probably could have communicated more and tried to do more for Devin's confidence, but no matter what, Hester just isn't a good WR that has awful hands. The whole making him into a WR in the first place, especially with the expectations to be a number 1, was completely idiotic.

Oh come on. This is professional football...not a Full House episode on how we can treat others better. If Hester needed someone to be "nice" to him- then he shouldn't have been so heavily relied on to be a starting WR.

"If we weren't on the same page, Jay just didn't say anything to me,'' Hester said. "He just wouldn't (throw) to me. That's just how he was.

It wasn't Jay's fault Hester never knew where to go....my god....

"With Matt, if he sees something that he feels needs to be changed, he'll come to you and say, 'Hey man, what do you think about doing it this way? It will give us a clearer look, and I'll be able to get the ball to you.'"

Clearly...Hester has had so much more success in Atlanta as a WR than he did in Chicago...GTFO.

Hester says his lack of a dialog with Cutler was a big reason he choose not to play receiver his last year in Chicago.

..........or the new coaching staff wanted nothing to do with him at WR.........

I will just give you these numbers that should speak for themselves.

Devin Hester

Drop as a percent of targets

2010 - 9.6 %
2011 - 8.9%
2012 - 10.0 %
2014 - 3.4 %

Receptions as a percent of targets

2010 - 54.7%
2011 - 46.4%
2012 - 57.5%
2014 - 64.4%

Scheme also plays apart into players styles and situations like that as well. You can judge a player himself going from scheme to scheme at seeing drastic shifts in those numbers.

Why did you not include 09? Could you not get the data of 09? You choose the years of Martz and the 1 year of Tice only because?

I find it pretty incredible that one of Hester's best years with Cutler was in 2008, when Cutler was on the Broncos.

Asshole beat me to it. Also, Hester still needs help lining up after 10 years in the league. All he needed was dialogue LOL.

I love how people pull only the stats they want on here...

Now for the whole picture:

Eddie Royal has 3750 yards over his career on 566 targets. Hester has 3310 yards on 449 targets over his career.

They are very comparable statistically over their career.

I'd probably take Royal over Hester. But this isn't a night and day as you all are trying to make it out to be.

One's an actual WR. The other is a return man posing as a WR. They are definitely night and day.

LOL no. Lovie didn't move him because he saw his speed and toughness and thought he would make a good receiver. He was moved to WR because he was so awful at DB, but so valuable on ST that they had to find a position for him. They figured they'd make the most of him by getting the ball in his hands and making him a weapon. If he was remotely decent as a DB he would never have been moved to offense.

Who honestly knows how awful he would have been as a DB. He never really got a chance to play defensive back in the NFL. I know that he was primarily a PR/KR guy in Miami but it seemed to me that he was given a cursory look at DB and the was transitioned to the WR role.

As for him and Cutler, Hester had plenty of opportunities to develop into that number one role and he never did. He can talk about how Cutler didn't 'nurture him' or other BS but the last time I checked he was responsible for his own plays and not whether some other player was as nice to him as other players. Cutler's job was to deliver a football to him and his job was to catch it. Too many times Hester failed in that job.

Devin Hester is an amazing returner, the best to ever play the game and probably a Hall of Famer. But he wasn't a receiver.

Interesting.

I usually dont enter the team dynamic or personal dynamic conversations about Cutler, but this one is pretty bad.

The Cutler nuthuggers always point to lack of quality WRs as one of the reasons Cutler struggled his first few years here.
While valid to a point, doesn't it strike people as pretty unprofessional to shut your WR out rather than help him?

One would think that getting on the same page with his WRs would be priority number one.

I totally agree with the scheme factor, and believe that Atlanta is using him right, and the Bears used him wrong. I am not viewing this as just a Cutler thread. But I do believe that when there is harmony and confidence between the players of a unit you will see better results.

Why didn't I use 09? Because when you are doing the work and analysis, you can always rig the stats in your favor.

I remember him being terrible at DB.

How do we know how much extra effort the O Coordinator the WR coach and the QB put towards Hester?

We have no clue. But the dynamic between the 2 of them should be worked at as well.

If in fact what Hester said is true, there is no excuse for Jay doing that, and there absolutely no excuse for his OC and HC to allow that kind of behavior.

Problem is, this is Hester speaking about past events. Hester tends to be emotional and speak from the heart and not the mind. If you just look at the numbers, Hester had his #1 and #3 seasons in targets and receptions and #1 and #2 in TD's his first 2 years with Cutler. His statement that Jay would just stop throwing him the ball is just false.

There was no lack for trying to get him the ball . Targets with Jay as his QB were 91,73,56,40. The trend down is quite apparent. By year 3 they had Marshall, and it was obvious Hester was pretty horrible as a receiver. You don't throw good money after bad, you cut bait, stop beating a dead horse, and the such.

It will be interesting to see if Hester continues to need instruction on where to line up in years 2 and 3 in ATL, if the honeymoon wears off and Ryan starts to spend less time coddling him.

Undoubtedly true- of course they tried to get him the ball seeing as how they thought he was going to be a legit WR.

But again- What kind of clown show were the bears running if what Hester said is in fact true?

As far as the bolded- That encompassed the time he was being trotted out as a one or 2 WR before getting his ass bumped down the depth chart. Of course 08-10 would be his best years.
How many snaps was he on the field for? how many plays was he the first read and wasnt targeted? We cannot know that.
And ultimately, **** the targets- The issue is lack of dialogue in game.

What we do know is that Cutler for whatever reason does not spend a whole ton of time putting his head together with his WRs... Certainly nowhere near the amount of time Rodgers, Manning or Brees does.

We all assume Hester is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Part of running a route is interpreting the defense and coverage you are facing.
At the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM, there should be dialogue between the QB and WR on why routes were run the way they are. What the QB expects on a blitz. What the QB expects in zone vs man... there are a million and one variables that can be practiced for, but during the game is when you find out exactly what you are facing, and if there is no discussion between the two, then no wonder the offense blew ass.

Cutler:"Devin, you know when the ball is within reach you have to reach your arms out to catch it? OK, try to work on that. I'll be sure to keep throwing the ball your way so you can perfect these skills of reaching your arms out that no coach in high school, college or the NFL has been able to teach you."

Wasnt Cutler constantly telling Hester where to line up? Im not surprised Cutler got frustrated as it showed more lack of knowledge of Hester's part than anything. Cutler eventually just found better targets (IE actually WR's) like Olsen,Marshall,Knox Davis, Bennett and even aromashadu. He never seems to have a problem telling those guys where to line up. With the Falcons they were super pass happy (3rd in the league) and they had injuries at WR (White and Jones constantly dealing with nagging injuries and even Harry Douglass being hurt) and yet his numbers and targets arent that far off from his 2010 season (the reason I used that is because he was being phased out by OC's, better WR's coming in and of course Cutler each year) when Hester had 475 yards and 4 td's compared to his 504 yards and 2 td's.
