I won't copy and paste this whole article on the mode of Devin Hester becoming a receiver as it is really long. It is a good article though with plenty of quotes in it and you might find it as a good read. Here is the link.

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/bears/2007-11-07-sw-devin-hester_N.htm

There are though a couple of things being said here over and over which are just wrong. I think somebody must of said it on here, and then people are just rolling with it , but it is not true.

1) Devin Hester did not become a WR to justify his pay. I don't know where that started. Yes, his pay went up at the same time. His pay was ridiculously low, and Angelo did the right thing and extended him, as he should have. The Bears then used that as a bargaining tool with him to convince him to play WR. But get this straight: THE BEARS WANTED DEVIN HESTER TO BE A RECEIVER LONG BEFORE HE GOT MORE MONEY. THEY DID NOT JUSTIFY HIS PAY BY MAKING HIM PLAY ANOTHER POSITION. THEY WANTED TO GET THE BALL IN HIS HANDS MORE OFTEN. SO DID I. SO DID EVERYBODY ELSE, ESPECIALLY GROSSMAN.

2) Lovie Smith did not say okay, you are now my number one receiver. Mushim Mohammad was the number one. He was like the 3 or 4 at the time. Bernard Berrien was the #2. Eventually by default he became listed one of the top couple of receivers, because of injuries, loss of players, bad rookies, whatever reason.

3) His season with Atlanta of 504 yards was arguably his best, or one of them, considering they used him exactly how we should have used him , as a 3rd of 4th receiver. Note, his year by year stats, receiving yards, etc. look almost exactly like Eddie Royal's. Don't tell the Eddie Royal fans that though.

Sorry but Royal > Hester and I don't care what the stats say and it's not even close honestly.

Hester's return abilities were amazing but that's a different discussion if you're comparing them as receivers.

Was not my point. I consider them similar in their role, neither is even close to being a number 1 or 2 receiver. They are 3 or 4s, for screens or short passes leading to potentially bigger gains based on their speed. I do however get a kick out of the fact that Royal is so highly regarded by many on here, and Hester is considered dogshit as a receiver, when Hesters stats are just about the same. The stats do say that. I am not an all stats guy. Honestly, it is Royal in this case that is way overrated by some Bears fans for no apparent reason. Really not much of a career at all, especially since that is his job to be a receiver.

ehh...Hester didn't really say anything that surprises me. I don't even think this is really taking a shot at Jay. That's just how Jay is. Simple as that...Want to be thrown the ball more often, know your assignments and routes.

Last year Hester's was 3.4% drops, Royal's was 4.4%.

I know in Chicago Hester's drop percentage was a lot higher. But as you can see, Hester for the Falcon's and Ryan was quite low. Kind of glad you asked that question as it does show that Hester did improve with Ryan, and he does not have all those drops that PIB says he has in Atlanta. As I said, he is a #3 or #4 and when used that way he is fine.

Maybe if cutler would have talked to him he'd be with the bears still, and be improving here rather than there?

WTF, drops are non caught catchable balls. Are you suggesting Ryan is making him actually catch the ball better? How would he do that?

If using drops/receptions+drops:
Hester has a career 11.2drop % vs Royals 5.4%.

The conventional method reveals 7.2% vs 3.4% favoring Royal.

That doesn't take in account how many times Hester was not close to a ball because he fucked up his route.

Statistically the are not all that close as you proclaim. They have each had 7 years as a receiver and Hester has under 2/3's as many TD's and 75% the receptions of Royal. Watching the two actually play, it isn't even that close.

"Taking a shot at Cutler" is inflammatory and inaccurate. All he did was describe how Jay was. He didn't pile on and say Jay sucked. He spoke about a very specific example of why he had discord with Cutler. Giving a specific example of why Ryan is a better leader/teammate is hardly taking a shot.

Taking a shot implies it was out of bounds or unnecessary. It was neither. Hester doesn't owe it to Cutler to bite his tongue. If Cutler doesn't want people saying these things, it's on Cutler to be better...it's not on someone else to cut him a break.

That's exactly what I was thinking... just put more elegantly.

Okay, the first half of your post you are arguing my point for me. His drops did drop 70% to go lower than Royal's last season. If career wise Royal's drops are so much lower, but yet last year Hester's was lower, what does that tell you? It should be easy to see, especially if you are an eye doctor.

And if you don't like the drops statistic being used, don't blame me. Blame PIB for again incorrectly bringing out info saying that Hester continues to drop balls all over the place in Atlanta, which is obvious false, and blame the guy who asked me to compare the two's drops.

I am staying on topic here, and that topic being Hester at Atlanta vs. Hester in Chicago.

Also, in Chicago, he was used wrong, throwing bombs and shit, and having the top corners on him. He should be getting screens and slants to utilize his speed.

You still haven't explained how Matt Ryan makes Devin Hester's hands better. Please elaborate.

And if you ever had a 100 level stats course you would understand that the sample size you are crowing about is statistically insignificant to proclaim he is suddenly a much more sure handed receiver.

Hell Chicago as a team had a lower drop % than ATL, and 23 teams in the NFL. Indy was the worst. What do drops have to do with the QB. Oh that's right...Cutler.

You need to learn a bit more about confidence and harmony. I have to get to the driving range now. Maybe later there will be time to explain more. You are at least one of the posters that will at least dig a bit and put a little meat behind it rather than just say shit without even looking it up. Just think about Tim Jennings pre-Lovie, Tim Jennings during Lovie, and Tim Jennings post-Lovie, and that should give you a pretty good hint as to where I am going with this. Later.
