Sorry, but I am missing the reference.

That's what everyone made Chipped Beef on toast with in my family, from the city of West Chicago to Las Vegas. I don't even know if it still exists.

That makes sense, we were poor, it was the cheap prepackaged (think $.50 packages) beef sandwich meat on ours.

This post made me incredibly happy for some reason. I think it's your memories of your mom doing the best she could, and you reflecting fondly about that
New generations are missing out on a lot of this. Now, everyone buys food and never gets the full experience. Its something about moms and grandmas making you food that you will always remember and cherish. The south is huge on it. Sunday dinners with the family. Ham and Turkey sammies that are the most basic, but you remember it tasting amazing.

Truly, cooking or cooking to the best of your ability, really boils down to love.

This is more in the line with a memory meal than something that I have had recently or keep around as a staple but my mother used to make "Cream chipped beef on toast" or "Shit on a shingle" for the rest of you when I was a kid and I always loved it.

That and there was this awesome biscuits and savory gravy thing that my grandmother always made as well for dinners. It was basically biscuits with a non cream based gravy on top. I know that my mother and aunts all know the recipe, but I have zero clue how to recreate it.

Stouffer’s makes a great frozen chipped beef. My mom always made if from scratch but the frozen is so easy.

The biscuit & gravy dish sounds good.

It still exists, at least it did a few years ago. Got nostalgic for shit on a shingle, so I made it.

One thing I have learned about crock pot cooking is that 99% of recipes are soggy with stock.

When I get a chance, I will post up a pretty solid chicken chili recipe for the crock pot.
It is easy as shit, cut up the chicken, open some cans, and let it simmer all day.

This thread has inspired me to dig out the shopping list tonight and make it for the weekend.

Chicken on Sunday

- 3 Cups rice
- 1 cup milk
- 1 can Cream of Mushroom/celery/chicken soup (whatever you prefer)
- Chicken thighs

Grease pan and mix together rice, milk, soup. Dump in greased pan. Lay chicken on top, skin side up. Salt/Pepper. Sprinkle 1/2 package dry onion soup mix. Bake at 400 - 35-45 minutes

you think families eat out every night? That doesn't seem right.

25 years ago when my kid was little we almost never ate dinners together. I worked till 4 wife to 8 or 9, we had to make special plans to sit down together, when both parents work it doesn't always work out great.

Full disclosure: as a kid I hated eating dinner with my whole family.

was there like prepared dinner in the fridge or did everyone just grab whatever out of the fridge for dinner?

Everything, from scratch out of the fridge, bought in advance for this meal, to picking up something on the way home, everything else.

When we ate together it was from scratch 90% of the time.

Basically, what Numbers said in his post. I do portioned meals as part of my business and its such a growing industry.

Majority of homes both parents work and dont have time or the will to cook. So, with all the delivery services, food brought to your door, fast food, and so many other options. Cooking and sitting down to dinner is s thing of the past for most families.
