And they charge too much. Kitchen sink was backing up a few months ago. I rented a power rodder but still wound up calling a plumber. The clog was 20 feet in and he bent the shit out of his own rodder line. That's the only time I'll call anyone, if I need special equipment or something major...like my roof I had 6 Mexicans on for 12 hours the other day. I'm too old for that shit anyways.

agreed. I have my limits as well. I won't run electricity but I'll swap out a fan, fixture or switch. I wouldn't replace my roof either! and I am Special person with HVAC. But that's my Father in laws forte. I just got done laying 500 feet of ceramic in my downstairs. I think not only do you have to not mind doing the work but you have to believe you can't **** it up that bad. I like a challenge. DIY is a form of entertainment for me.

Agreed completely. The only thing I'll add is that there's often a sense of pride in the work once you've finished. The more often you complete a task you're happy with, the more you enjoy doing the work in the beginning...sort of like being able to see/knowing and understanding why what you're doing at the beginning/throughout the process is essential, and why it will make it all worth while.

Basement near completion. Need two more doors, trim for that, and the entertainment center.

Wife and I just bought our first house. Painting throughout, new baseboards, possibly new back splash, a lot of little stuff that are going to be time-consuming, but worth it in the long haul.

I'm staining and poly'ing the trim first, then cutting. Quick question though. One wall I have is 22 feet. Obviously I'd be going two 12' pieces on the bottom. Instead of just putting them together, or putting a stop up, can I join them together with cuts on the miter?? If so, wouldn't it be a cleaner look doing something other than 45?

Sorry man just saw this. Yeah you want to use 45 degree angles to butt the two pieces together on long stretches.

Well now you tell me!!!!

I actually went ahead and did that anyways - worked out well. I did however wrongly measure a door size and only realized it after staining/poly'ing. Luckily, it was the perfect size for another opening downstairs.

just added a bunch of insulation in my attic to get it up to R49. I have a low slope roof so getting around up there is a pain in the ass. also realized that whoever installed the siding (before I owned the house) instead of cutting nice big holes for air-flow in the soffit vents, they just hammer punched a small hole. So I opened up holes with the sawzall to let that attic space breathe. Hoping my bills go down this winter

We're in the house now. New Paint, new baseboards in the main areas of the house, hung a TV in the master BR. Still a LOT of work to do, but it's livable at this point. Will post pics when I can.

have started on this project. Got the box built, just adding shelves/dowels now. Putting the dowels in by drilling out a hole on one of the sides, and rimming out a hole about 1/4 of the way through on the other side, sliding the dowel in, wood gluing it. Seems to be working pretty well.

Again, will post pics when I get a chance.

I guess you can consider modifying vehicles DIY projects. Just ordered some goodies for my Tacoma. Installing my front skidplate after I do a truck liner coating on it and add a TRD stencil, stubby antenna, and gutting the airbox with an AFE Pro-Dry drop-in filter. Hopefully I'll have some extra scratch around Christmas time so I can order my lift.

I've got a 2004 Tacoma Crew Cab, 6-cyl, 4wd. The only thing I've considered doing to it is getting the front windows and windshield tinted (back windows already tinted). What else can I do to it? ha

Got the washer/dryer moved into the house today, and of course, the power cord was a 4 prong cord, and I had a 3-prong outlet. Went to a local hardware store, got a 3-prong cord, took the back cover off of the dryer, replaced the power cord...then had to hook up all the hoses and what not. Something little, but had never done it before.

Installed a two-way dimmer switch for my kitchen lights the other day -- not nearly as cool as what Bookie's doing -- but -- still cool to me :D

I put dimmer switches on everyone of my switches. Check out the digital ones at Home Depot if you ever switch another one out. All finger touch ( no slides) 30.00 a piece.

Here's a custom mantle I built for my girlfriends parents. All the lights are on those digital dimmers, but the cool thing is the dimmer also has an infrared remote. 40.00 at Home Depot.

Set the mood lighting and break out the Barry White !!
