Need some woodworking advice.

I'm making a shadowbox large enough to house 5 Sam Adams beer glasses. I've got 1''x 4'' planks I'm attempting to attach to 1'' x 10'' planks...but I'm afraid of splitting the wood. I took a smaller piece and drilled a pilot hole the distance from the edge of the wood I'd need...but the wood split every time when I attempt to get a screw through it.

Tips?

Drill a bigger pilot hole. If you are not sure of the size, just find a drill bit that is roughly the same diameter as the base of screw you are using (not the including the threads).

OR

If you have some wood clamps, just glue it together.

I'm afraid if I get any larger a bit for the pilot hole, it'll be too big for the screw to catch. Regardless, worth a try, and I appreciate the info.

Something I just tried was essentially a counter-sink, where i took a 1/4" bit and drilled about 1/3 of the way through plank 1 at an angle (towards the edge)...then drilled a pilot hole through the center and into plank 2...then inserted the screw. Worked well, but will be tough to do perfectly on every hole.

This is a long shot, but does anyone know of a glass manufacturer, locally, that makes tempered high iron safety glass? I made a few phone calls and worked teh googles, but no luck.

I didn't get a chance to clean my gutters which caused a bit of a chain reaction for me. My greenhouse took a nasty hit from falling ice and heavy slush from this last storm. If it weren't for the fact that I have cordless electricity running in the greenhouse to power vents and heat, I wouldn't care and use the standard clear low-iron type with green tint. But I need actual green glass for its magnetic properties, and tempered so it can withstand climate. Usually I'm on top of this stuff, but the last time I needed glass, was when I built the damn thing, and now the glassmakers I dealt with have fully switched to starphire based products, along with nearly everyone else.

Anyone have this miter saw?
http://www.craftsman.com/craftsman-...0P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1#reviewsWrap

Looking at getting a sliding miter saw -- thought this was a good price for one...

I bought this dewalt miter saw for $250 this past may (the stand cost $200 but Lowes had a deal where they threw it in with any dewalt miter saws)

I absolutely love that miter saw...I have built my deck, my brother in laws deck extension, and a ramp for my shed with it. Already have a few more projects lined up where I need it this summer.

As for the one you are asking about...thats not a bad price, especially if you get the stand with it. Those stands are key and make things a whole lot easier.

Here's a shot of the pit dug down with the swing away grill. In the Grill Master's Thread I will be posting pics of my first open flame grilling experience.

I just noticed that for a long time I had that same pool in my backyard. Am I brett? Is brett, me?

Also, one of my new years resolutions is to start taking classes around home improvement. I've looked into the Home Depot shit and meetup.com groups, but anybody have a link to anything else along the Chicagoland area?

I've got an atrium at the front of my house with a pond and fountain. It's filled with chlorinated water right now, but I'm thinking of converting it into a koi pond. Has anyone here done that before?

Because I want to know, what did you do to your engine? What extra improvement did you get?

Other than a programmable ecu, more efficient intake and exhaust than the corvette would have, nothing is done to the motor.

Once the car is "complete" and I can drive the thing with 500hp Ill go with a big single turbo and have a much power as I want.

How much power are you expecting out of that LS3?

Not sure. I might not do anything to the internals and hope it doesn't come apart with ~800-1000. But, I'll likely dowel the mains and add some arp studs and whatnot. I've thought about it, just not making any plans yet.

The way it sits...somewhere in the 500's..

If I didn't say it before or enough, that's a really cool project Matt. I hope you get to enjoy driving it as much as you enjoy building it.
