Brett Jackson leads off with a solo HR! His hot streak continues and the ICubs grab the early 1-0 lead. T-1.

He been playing well in the last week

McNutt is dealing tonight in Tennessee. He has thrown 5 scoreless innings of 1 hit ball. His ERA is down to 2.52. McNutt hasn't been going very deep into games this year, but he ought to be able to go deeper tonight with only 61 pitches thrown.

Zeke Devoss last two nights: BB, HBP, single, BB, BB, BB, BB, two runs scored and he is standing at 3rd right now after his 3rd walk tonight

This type of guy Theo will love.

I have read where some people think he could be 3-5 SP or a backend type of RP

Yeah most project him to be a backend of the rotation starter. Again that is why I want the Cubs to sign a top of the rotation starter. Garza, Shark and free agent signing provides a formidable front 3, and the Cubs really do have a lot of guys that could be adaqueate in the backend of the rotation like McNutt.

McNutt with his second strikeout of the night to start the sixth inning.

Very good point. Then they just have to rebuild the offense and bullpen

McNutt got into a little bit of trouble with runners on the corners, but managed to get out of the inning unscathed. McNutt hasn't thrown more than 81 pitches this year and so he might be done after this inning. Junior Lake made a nice play deep in the hole and a strong throw that resulted in an infield hit. Junior Lake definitely has a lot of raw atheltic ability.

The Storm Chasers get a 2R HR from Wil Myers and extend their lead over Iowa to 4-1. B-3

To bad KCR not competiting. Would love to get Myers part of package for Garza

Smokies get on the board with a 2 out wild pitch. McNutt in line for the win now.

McNutt is done after 6. That is the deepest he has gone this year. He is certainly rebounding nicely after his really poor 2011.

McNutt has a good ERA but I don't know if it's his perpetual blister or an arm problem that's keeping him under 4 IP per start.

To be honest I think it is because they have him on a super strict pitch count. As they said in the broadcast he hasn't gone over 80 pitches before. I am guessing they are being very cautious due to the injuries last year. I don't believe he has had any issues this year.

If it takes him 80 pitches to go 4 IP then he's simply not being efficient and that's a recipe for disaster were he to go another round through the lineup.

He has gone over 5 innings a couple of times and I don't know if 80 was the number the whole season or not. I am just speculating at why he has a good ERA and never been stretched out that deep in games. Either way it is encouraging. It isn't like McNutt is going to be an impact arm, but the odds of him being a useful big league arm is certainly going up with more perfromances like tonight.

Junior Lake struck out to end the seventh, but has gone 2 for 4 on the night. He is becoming a pretty interesting prospect with his improved walk rate. Smokies are up 2-1 heading into the eighth.
