Code -- what do you think....can Jefferson turn into a Kelly-like player? He reminds me a LOT of Kelly as a freshman....more athleticism and lower bball IQ...but the heart, the drive, and the "whoa, he just did that?" stuff is there.
Comparing two different kinds of players.
Amile is a small post player with a large wingspan. He goes straight up near the basket and knows exactly how to finish in the lane when he gets a good pass. He has good hands and good instincts with the ball, he sees the game and offense in a slower medium than a lot of freshman do. Amile relies more on post skills and good hands and length defensively.
Kelly is a tall perimeter-oriented player who can mix it up in the post but primarily does damage in the midrange and 3 point areas. He isn't as physical nor as much of a finisher as Amile. Kelly can work with the ball after receiving a pass to get a good shot, more of a creator. Kelly relies more on refined perimeter skills and IQ defensively
I think Amile as a freshman is more up to game speed than Kelly was a freshman. I think the fact that Kelly has diversified his game since freshman year(meaning more use of the post, more use of shot fakes, more physicality with interior defense) can be implicative for Amile. Not that Amile will diversify his game in the same way, but the things we see Amile maybe lack(such as face-up or back-to-the-basket moves, a perimeter shot and improved handle, situational defensive IQ and foul discipline) may be added as he progresses at Duke. Certainly the reason why Kelly became the valuable player that Duke misses so much now is that he refined his game and diversified it by being able to perform certain tasks he couldn't as a freshman buried in the team.
