Exactly. But I think ignoring the reality that they would/can be competition is kind of what got the Bulls fan base in the trouble it's been in. After Miami pulled off what they did the Bulls tried to narrow the focus and act as though Miami was this rare event and the Bulls will be fine "bench mob" "depth" and all the other BS that came out. Whatever. Miami wasn't this rare event.
i don't get how miami is a rare event when miami has not only been a precedent for teams like the knicks, nets, and clippers
but it followed a similar blueprint to the celtics
i think it's just chicago fans being in denial that these star-based teams are the trend now(not sure how much the luxury tax might affect it though, that could be considered, but it's all about managing the money)
i'm not disagreeing the teams could/will be competition
but i think they could be helpers in another step of the process
I think, ideally, you try to build around rose(meaning every contract is essentially expendable and could be departed with if convenient)
expiring contracts like deng and boozer are assets that could be packaged
first step is letting omer go....the bulls dont need to commit that much money to a crappy center when it could be used for much more important and less expendable purposes
if there's one guy you keep out of deng, boozer, and noah..it's probably noah
he's the youngest, has still a ceiling to reach,a good playmaker, and a good base down low defensively
and while his contract is cuffing(meaning holds the bulls back a little financially), comparatively it is close to market value
plus,noah's contract doesn't end until 2016(i think..not sure)
i think noah is certainly expendable, but i think there's an argument that he could be kept as the team's center
mirotic could fill in the 4...so,really, i think the bulls could go look to build on the wings
meaning, the bulls could use deng and boozer's contract to make trades to clear cap space or get a good player/asset
clearing cap space could help the bulls with potential high-end FAs, or if they trade for assets they could make another trade to get a high-end FA, or they could use the packaged contract to directly get a high-end FAs
alot of options
i think the bulls could look to get a guy like rudy ***,granger, or even melo in 2014 by becoming an attractive team through an option i listed
i think then if you have the SF covered, you could look to use boozer's expiring contract to try to get a solid 2,among other things
i'm a little vague with this plan, because the plan itself has to be vague
the context comes the situation...so maybe boozer's contract is gone before deng's..who knows
whatever's convenient
Before Miami it was Boston, after Miami it was the Knicks, after the Knicks it was the Clippers(and nearly the Lakers), after the Clippers it was the Nets and on and on and on. Burying your head in the sand and ignoring where other teams are possibly heading and what they are aiming to do is pretty effing stupid. You can't view the Bulls re-tool through a prism of just them. You have to try and evaluate and take the entire league into account. To not do so is being willfully ignorant to reality.
