I wouldn't be opposed to contraction especially if it meant Loria would finally go away.

So you think Marlins as well?
If I had to pick franchises that ought to be Miami would be high on the list, but since they just got a huge stadium that the people of Florida are paying for that is really unlikely. I just hate Loria and what the other owners have allowed them to get away with.

Well the Rays could move there, but then they leave their 'fanbase' in Tampa behind, Florida just sucks for baseball in general which is weird considering Atlanta is so close to them both

Atlanta has a lot more history with baseball than any of the Florida markets, and you have the whole migrated populace with old loyalities. But Atlanta isn't that great of market either since you are probably to young remember that the Braves would have trouble selling out postseason games towards the end of their run of division titles.

Jerry Reinsdorf says MLB should contract to 28 teams, though he didn't specifically say which two he would contract. Thoughts?
I say the Marlins and the Mariners.

Calcaterra had a response re: contraction which encompasses all the reasons why I think it won't happen.

Plus he used to be a lawyer so he might be more familiar with the nitty gritty than I am.

I'd go with the Marlins and Rays. Even with excellent teams, they simply don't draw crowds or merit support. In 2003, when the Marlins won it all, they averaged 16,290 per game... and the only reason they had so much as half-capacity crowds during the NLCS or WS was because they were taking on the Cubs and Yankees. There are a lot of Chicago and New York retirees in South Florida. The only team that year that had a lower attendance... Tampa. The Rays went to the WS in 2008 and only managed to fill an average of 22,259. Their playoff games were blacked out due to not selling enough tickets...including the WS. Only twice in their franchise history have they ever managed to finishes in the top 25 in attendance was 2009-2010. They returned to their usual 29th place last year.

This year, the Marlins sit 18th in the attendance rankings... their first time ever not in the bottom 4. Problem is, they had big attendance early on due to the new stadium and the spending this past winter for big names. It's pretty clear now that trading away fan favorites like Ramirez and Sanchez, and probably as much of the acquisitions from the spending spree, that the attendance is going to tank. The Rays, despite being in the thick of the AL WC race, has the second lowest attendance in the majors.

I actually think the Marlins, Rays, A's, Pirates, Royals, and Indians should probably all be disbanded and bring the league down to 24 teams, 12 in each league. None of these teams can build a strong enough fanbase to support them. They are also located in cities well-known for fickle fan support in all major sports. You can go back to the old 4-division system, and make the WC's based on whoever takes 2nd place in each division. However, you'd find the same reason the Cubs and Cardinals crapped all over the idea of realignment back in the 90s... as they would probably both head to the West or be separated.

Starling Marte was just called up by the Pirates and he hit a HR on the very first big league pitch he saw. He also is the first international amateur signing that has made it to the majors for the Pirates in 15 years.

Verlander's throwing batting practice. Tigers and Indians tied.

It is funny that he's crappy outing is 7 innings giving up 5 runs. The dude has gone at least 6 innings over 60 games in a row. The next closest streak is something like 20.
