FOX LAKE – A growing collection of video evidence, a large and growing reward and a dedicated FBI tip line are the latest tools investigators unveiled Friday afternoon in their search for three suspects alleged to have shot and killed a Fox Lake police lieutenant.


Footage from a home security camera, which still is being processed, is now one of several pieces of footage from area cameras that police hope will lead to the killers of Lt. Joe Gliniewicz, who was shot and killed early Tuesday morning. The FBI is working to combine all that footage into a timeline they hope will help identify the suspects, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko said.
More than three days after the shooting, the only description of the three male suspects is that two are white and one is black.
The footage has come from several sources, including intersection cameras from the Lake County Division of Transportation, which Filenko said had the foresight upon hearing of the shooting to preserve footage from its cameras in the area.
“Now we’ve acquired several more videos that we believe are even more relevant than [the original residential] one,” he said.
The original home footage still was being processed Friday by the Department of Homeland Security, which has the necessary equipment – it is stored on a hard drive police have said makes it more difficult to access.
Police said Gliniewicz was patrolling Tuesday about 7:52 a.m. when he noticed three males conducting suspicious activity in the 100 block of Honing Road near a marshy area and a concrete plant. At 7:55 a.m. he called for backup, and officers arrived at 8:01 a.m. At 8:09 a.m., they found Gliniewicz shot. He was about 50 yards from his vehicle, police have said.
More than 100 leads are actively being tracked as of Friday, Filenko said, and the FBI has opened a dedicated tip line and website to help collect more.
People with tips can call the FBI around the clock at 800-CALL-FBI or submit them online at www.fbi.gov/foxlake, Lake County Sheriff’s Det. Chris Covelli said. The website allows people to upload files, such as photos.

Schaumburg-based Motorola Solutions announced it has contributed $50,000 to the reward for information leading up to the apprehension of the killers. Covelli said numerous other businesses and corporations have reached out to donate as well.

Filenko declined comment on the forensic evidence, aside from again confirming that police found Gliniewicz's service weapon, a .40-caliber handgun. He has declined comment on whether Gliniewicz was shot with his own gun.


While officials have said that Fox Lake residents should feel safe with the heavy police presence in the area as the investigation continues, Filenko reiterated that people should not assume that the suspects have left the area – he said fugitive criminals often are more comfortable hiding in place.
"Historically, what we have found is that they still localize, and that's our hope, that they're still within our reach," Filenko said.
Gliniewicz, a beloved figure known as "G.I. Joe" to the community, was a 30-year veteran of the police force who was set to retire at the end of the month. He leaves behind a wife and four sons.
The funeral has been set for 1 p.m. Monday at Antioch High School, 1133 Main St., Antioch. A public viewing will take place beforehand at 9 a.m.
Gliniewicz will be laid to rest after a procession to Hillside East Cemetery, 450 E. Depot St., Antioch, the release said.
