The ultra-inflated QB contracts of $45-55+ million per year seemed shocking, yet somehow sustainable with their importance to the game and the way the cap was increasing.

But now with several other position groups starting to crack $30-40+ million? Gonna be interesting to see how that math correlates with winning the next 3-5 years.
The cap goes up every year, as do players' salaries.

Of course it does, but the percentage of the cap that these top contracts are taking up is going up even faster.

I wouldn't doubt if they end up re-signing Trey Hendrickson next.
They definitely can, but the Bengals are not a cash rich team relative to their peers. Or at minimum, they're more fiscally responsible with how they use cash. But they're not rich outside of owning a football team like some owners. This has cost them a lot of money this season though cause they could've done deals a year ago and have saved significant cash.

Anyway, after dishing out so much cash in these deals, they probably aren't too excited to do the same for Hendrickson. I'm sure there are plenty other owners that would just pay Hendrickson now and move on. So that said, this is more of an ownership thing than anything else at this point. Not throwing stones in my glass house here... just kind of a known thing.

Yeah the upfront cash layout is something most fans don’t think about. We typically think about cap space only

Jaylon Johnson's deal sure looks like a steal now.

Yup, lets get guys paid... probably starting with Gordon.

They need to think about some others too. Namely:
  • Braxton - Gotta decide first if they even want to keep him. If he's the weakest link on the line, I can be ok with it. I think a mobile QB like Caleb can manage an average LT so long as his IOL is amazing.
  • Edwards - I like Edwards, but not sure what he's looking for in money. Also, not sure if there's a fit issue in Allen's defense.
  • Wright - Debatably early to talk about, but I'd get ahead of this one like we did with DJ. Figure out how they want to negotiate considering the 5th year option cost. Barring injury, there's no world where I don't see the Bears keeping him.
Thuney too actually, but he's kind of a different type of extension given his age. I don't see him as one that will be a market setter. In a year, I'd probably start talking to JJ again too and see where he's at. The cap will probably go up ~10% a year. Poles has been good about being ahead of the market and should continue to be aggressive with it by targeting the key pieces of the team to lock down for extra years.

Gordon for sure. I would say Edwards fits this system, much like Davis does with the Saints. That being said, Bears probably won't sign him to an early extension.

They had a lot of cap space. Remember, they've got very little money invested in QB, same as us.

They have very few significant contracts on the books. Really only JJ, right? Hockenson? Darrisaw probably kicks in soon. They've also not been drafting very well and don't have a lot of extensions to get done. I can't think of any significant draft hits to get extended. I guess Addison soon enough.

Edwards could easily slide in as the MLB if we want to let Edmunds go.

It doesn't make much sense for the Bears or for Braxton to talk extension right now. From the Bears' side, are you really wanting to sign a guy that many think should be a swing tackle to a deal well over $10 mil per year? And from Braxton's side, you've finally got an interior line to take the pressure off and a coach that's got a history of helping his tackles a lot more than he had before, so why not put a good year on film and possibly go get $20+ mil considering where these contracts are going as the cap continues to rise.
