Differences in Transition vs. Franchise Tag Compensation

If a player is assigned the transition tag, he can still negotiate with teams in free agency. However, if a new club offers a deal, the team that tagged him can choose to match that offer. If they do so, the player must sign with his original team.

However, if the team that tagged the player declines to match the offer, the player is free to leave and join the new team.

In that case, the player’s initial team does not receive any form of compensation for losing its transition tag recipient. Teams that decline to match franchise-tag offer sheets get two first-round picks in return.

I mean… I’m not worried about his money and I’m sure he’s not worried about being broke. But when you’re one of the best to ever do it, you usually want to be paid like it. His contract isn’t horrendous moving forward though, but he’s still making roughly Jared Goff money. If he gets out of the last two years though, then it won’t matter. But from the competitive… hard to compete if one of the best in the game is making under market value, so it’s partially jealousy speaking.
In the modern era, players sign long-term contracts and only the team is committed. If Mahomes feels underpaid, at any time he can simply hold out and KC will renegotiate.

I looked it up a week ago and he'll have a $60M Cap hit for a couple of years but nothing outrageous. The thing with him is that he has a 10 year contract, so that definitely add a lot of flexibility because the team can spread out the money over the many years he still as left.

So, looks like there is a full out after the 2027 season in his contract (so 3 seasons from now). Looking at the next 3 years, I don't think there is much the Chiefs can do with Mahomes contract as it is. Now, I can see a world where they try and back load any contacts they sign now and then basically have Mahomes opt out after 2027 and write his "final" contract as he will be 32/33 at the time.

Good news… now the hope just sits on whether they sign him or not. That was always the real threat over the tags.
Hopefully him and Darnell Wright had a good relationship and D.Wright is on the phone with him right now. It'll still come down to money offered but if the relationship was good between them then it should definitely help.

I can't imagine they don't have a good one. I think they played together as starters for 2 years. Both seem like easy going guys... It's a super small extra factor though, but I rather have a small extra factor than no extra factor.

I do imagine he'd take a discount to stay in KC. How much of one? Not sure... but the Bears offer probably needs to be at least 22/year.... maybe more. The cap going up 10% means he should ask for 10% more than other comparables.

Unfortunately, I just think his price goes up accordingly. I'm now expecting 22-23/year.
We will see. It it’s hard to argue for needing more than being the highest paid player at your position, which would be like $21M for him.

I think they all look closely at % of cap when they negotiate. But, the counter could be "you're not the best at your position" kinda thing and make an argument that he doesn't deserve top % of cap. Regardless, the other factor is that I think it's 18 teams project to have over 30 million of spendable cap space (taking out draft picks/filling roster) and even more can join the party if they make cuts or restructures. So, it feels like teams can get pretty silly with their money this year if they want to. With Higgins off the board, Trey probably slots in as the top FA.

PFF Grades:

Trey Smith - 78.8
Teven Jenkins - 75.4
Braxton Jones - 77.4
Darnell Wright - 79.3
Matt Pryor - 69.9
Kevin Zeitler - 86.8

🤷‍♂️

I know it’s PFF. Still interesting IMO.
