Adding void years doesn't change the value of the contract, it's still a top deal for an OL. Adding void years is playing with the cap. The value of the contract is still the same. How a team handles allocating the cap is entirely team specific and up to them (front load, back load, guarantees, escalators, void years, etc.)

The team is still allocating $66M "real" dollars for 3 years to that player.

As for KC, it's like I said, they can "Tackle" the issue many different ways. Of course you failed to neglect the whole idea of them drafting an OT this year before moving on from Taylor and then they wouldn't have to still spend $20M. Like I said, many options.
I didnt say it changes the value of of the contract. I am saying it changes the AAV from a cap perspective. If I sign for 3 years and 66m that is an AAV of 22m and over the life of the contract the AAV will average 22m no matter how you allocate the money. However if I add 2 void years then the 66m gets allocated over 5 years not 3 years so the actual AAV for cap purposes is actually 13.2m.

The Eagles have allocated around 35m, 35m, and 11m of Mailata, Dickerson and Johnson contracts to void years. So that is 81m of cap space that they are saving relative to the Bears during the non-void years. If the contracts are 5 non void years then that is an average of 16.2m a year more the Eagles will have to spend during those first 5 years. So again that allows the Eagles to spend more from a cap persepctive during that period relative to the Bears who dont use void years.

Of course the flip side is the Eagles will be spending 81m in cap space during void years where the player isnt on the roster but they are gambling that the cap will be higher those years and that without a lot of cap dollars already allocated to those years they can build a team around that 81m in dead cap.

As to your other point I already addressed it. I said their younger options at T have underperformed so my point was even if they do draft a RT to eventually replace Taylor I doubt they want that RT plus unproven Morris and Suamataia at tackle given they are perennial contenders. So I expect them to try and find a vet T to secure one of the T spots unless Morris or Suamataia take a huge step.

Not only should the Bears sign Trey Smith but they should sign Becton also. I'd rather see the FO drop 40 million on two starting OGs in tandem instead of 30+ million to franchise Jenkins and maintain Keenan Allen.

Take Jake Majors in the third round and now you're in business and have an offensive line worth talking about.

Every FA is paid more than they're really worth. Two young veteran OGs that are part of multiple playoff/Superbowl runs and a winning culture to anchor your starting Offensive Line.

I'd be more than fine with Poles overpaying for those two.

Think a young G (Smith, Becton) to go with Zeitler makes more sense. Then you draft a G in the 2nd so that eventually you can stagger the big contracts.

Zeitler and Pryor both went for 1000+ snaps and would be dramatically cheaper.

I guess my question with Smith is if you’re going to make him the highest paid guard in the league are you really getting that level of play? And if not….. is it worth it because as you correctly point out he is available all the time?
You're not wrong, but feels like the right time to spend a bit to get higher end talent in the building before we have to pay off guys like Wright, Caleb, and Rome. The Bears can overspend and structure the contract to allow flexibility in a couple of years. I think Trey represents a roughly top 10 guard, that's young, been healthy, and can be a leader for our team coming from a winning culture. If we don't spend, we just end up with Nate Davis' and sit on our cap space. We unfortunately have to spend to accelerate our progress cause we need to start locking positions down.

I agree that it's not 'Trey or bust' though. I think Milton Williams and Mack are good players to target too. I also like Dalman. Sweat is a good name too, though I fear what he may command in the open market. Besides that, there are a ton of guards that could be solid adds.

The NFL doesnt allowed deferred money the way MLB does so no risk of Bonilla or Otani contracts. As long as Mahones has base salary that exceeds the vet minimum they can still restructure. His contract runs to 2031 and cap hits starting in 2028 are 33, 35, 45.5 and 48.3 compared to cap hits in the 65m range the next 3 years. So if they want they can convert base salary into SB and reduce the 65m cap hits next 3 years and increase the 2028 and beyond cap hits as by then you may be looking at 70m-80m a year QBs.

I fully expected Mahomes to actually "opt out" in 3 years when his contract allows it and then sign a new deal. My sense tells me the Chiefs kind of tread water, per say, the next 3 seasons and wouldn't surprise me if they try and trade some of their higher paid players to load up on draft picks and build back through the draft so that they can reset the teams' finances with a new Mahomes contract in 2028.

He did miss two games this year but i could live with that if he was playing well and on a good contract.
Yeah, looked into that, he had a concussion that cost one game, and got rolled up in the Dallas game that cost him the last game of the season.

Are you still going oline first 'if' they sign Smith, Becton, and Zietler? Or are you rolling the dice on BPA?

If they signed all 3 then i'm not even sure i'm going OL with either of the first two picks, i'm going DE, DT and with the 3rd it's out of OL, S, RB or WR.
