Anyone ever try growing Globe artichokes? If so, were they difficult to take care of?
I have artichokes that grow in my yard with little to no bother, but I'm in New Mexico. They come back every year in their own and even send little transplants to other places in the yard at times.

It's so warm I want to plant. But I know better Albuquerque is famous for being like it is right now (mid seventies) then dropping one last hard freeze on us for good measure in early April.

When do you put your plants in the ground?

I haven't built my box yet, but that's the plan for this weekend. Just 8x4x20 filling it with a mixture, and getting worms from a buddy.

I actually tried planting very early here in south eastern Wisconsin one yr with success. I usually put landscaping cloth down (black), but around the cages I set I used shrink wrap to make small green houses. Had frost after that, and the plants did fine. I didn't really get veggies too much earlier though, maybe 2 weeks or so compared to when I normally plant 1st week in May...

I’m in the Bay Area, CA., putting down the tomato seedlings this weekend. In a month it will be warm enough to plant peppers and cucumbers, and when May rolls around everything else.

Everything is popping off.

Radishes lettuce and beans are all looking good. Established plants like tomatoes jalapenos and habaneros are all happy and growing everyday.

I'm the 80's already so I'm glad nothing is looking pissed being so new.

Already got tomatoes on the vine, really strange because I didn't get the first buds last season until end of June.

Been harvesting and processing large volumes of spinach & kale along with our tree fruit, only way to keep up with production (other than gifts) is by juicing, so we have pressing like crazy. Using the veg/fruit pulp to bake bread loafs and muffins, and also using the pulp to make veggie burgers (added black beans and oatmeal, with an egg to bind).

Surprisingly, my hens do not care for the pulp, makes no sense.

I don't have tomatoes yet but the plant has grown like 2 feet in the last 10 days. Guess it's enjoying all that rain.

I had the early tomatoes as you describe a couple seasons back, after that initial mini harvest there was no production until the normal projected dates.

Surprising they wouldn't eat that. Chickens are fucking stupid we dumped a pile of I can't remember what( they usually eat anything) but the first chicken into the pile grabbed a big chunk and ran for a corner with the rest of the dumbshits in pursuit while there was plenty for everyone in the pile just presented to them.

I need to fertilize some potted tomatoes, the starter soil I used didn't have any fertilizer in it and I'm seeing a huge difference between the plant that was and was not fertilized.

Anyone had any luck with the miracle grow shake and feed fertilizer that supposedly lasts for three months?

It says it's for all veggies.

I've used it every year, usually apply after a week or 2 after putting plants outside. Mine kick ass every year. I also put some home made compost in the bottom of each hole when planting.

Miracle Grow is nitrogen heavy, which encourages green growth, not fruit or vegetable growth. It also only feeds the plant. The micro organisms in the soil do not like it, and as there is too much chemical fertilizer in Miracle Grow, more than a plant can utilize, the rest will wash into the water table.

Simply put, using organics feeds the soil which then feeds the plants. Synthetics feed the plants and the soil starves which leads to an increased dependence upon fertilizer and results in soil that is more or less biologically dead. Salts can also build up. Fish and forest fines, compost teas, etc are much better for a continuing healthy garden year after year.
