A couple months ago, I had caterpillars in my garden, and they were eating up the tomato plants. A few weeks ago, and much to my happiness, I noticed a preying mantis in those same tomato plants. They are natural predators of those caterpillars, so I'm not worried about that anymore. But I've got a new problem now because I just noticed that something has been eating all my eggplants. As I approached my garden, a mouse ran up the wall that is adjacent to my garden, scaring the shit out of me. Other than a cat, is there any way to combat this problem?

my mother always put peanut butter on mouse traps as they seemed to be most attracted to that (instead of the cliche cheese).

Ok, maybe I'll give that a try. I used cheese in some and eggplant (afaik, they've only been targeting my eggplants) in others.

I constructed a helluva mouse trap using peanut butter and a 5gal bucket a yr ago...I'll see if I can dig up pics. It was super effective and eradicated overnight.

You get a 5 gallon bucket and fill it partially with water. You then lean a piece of wood from the ground to the top of the bucket as a ramp. I poured in a layer of sunflower seeds to cover the water and it likes like solid ground below. They jump in and drown.
You could also use a coat hanger, string a beer can on it covered with peanut butter. It acts as a roller and they fall in as shown below:

I use mousetraps with peanut butter smeared on it, works great.
Poison might hurt/kill other animals that might eat a dead mouse; cat, dog, raccoon, hawk, crow... something to think about.

LOL. I forgot to add that you put a few sunflower seeds on the ramp to lead them up.
I don't do the bucket trap anymore. I had it outside on a weekday, it was 90+ degrees that day and when I came home there was a chipmunk floater.
Not a pretty sight several after hours in there in the the heat...
