haha it's less than great, and it's bankrupting us all. Because it's government run, they make the last choice on everything. My dad had to wait TWENTY YEARS to get his knees replaced. When they finally replaced them they said "my god, you have no cartilage at all, your bones have been rubbing together for so long that they are wearing away, you must have been in a lot of pain" No shit, if he wasn't he wouldn't have been fighting to get this done for twenty fucking years.

Plus, we still need coverage to cover treatment. What's the point of being able to go to the doctors if you can't afford the medication? Not to mention all of the doctors leaving for the states because after accumulating over $100k in student debt, you are paid only $10k more than a highschool teacher.

Wow, that sounds fantastic!!!

We should implement sometime like that in the states. Can't wait.

How is Rex's story much different than what happens here? In the US a private insurer has every right to make a customer wait months or years for some elective surgeries. Every citizen has the right to spend out of pocket to cover any medical procedure. Just like Canadians.

Why are we talking about medical insurance in a Gas Prices thread?

Sure, but I bet your legs don't hurt from having to walk everywhere. Conveniences like driving an automobile are not free folks.

And here you have the option to get another insurer.

IF you want to pay the extremely large premium out of pocket. It is easier to pay for a one time elective surgery than get a new insurer all together.

Right, option, ability, privelege...its sementatics.

You can't walk up to a doctor or hospital in Canada and pay 'with cash' for a service? Is it illegal or something?

I think he is saying no you can't. Why? Because then that paying customer is utilizing services outside the realm of controls/rationing imposed by the government run healthcare service. Remeber the government ministers know more about what is in your best interest than you or your healthcare provider.

A better question would be is there private fee for service healthcare in Canada that does not fall under control of the government? Don't know the answer, but since lots of Canadians seem to run to the border for healthcare the government won't provide I suspect not or very limited.

That still is a choice. Something they don't have in Canada if I am understanding Rex correctly.

It's not an option. you get what they give you, or you go down to America and pay out of pocket. We don't have the choice.

Thanks for clarifying. So in other words, the entire medical profession and all jobs within it in Canada are 'state jobs'?

basically, yes. There is some "Privatized health care" or what they call it up here. If you want your own hospital room, it will cost you. If you need an ambulance, it will cost you. That's basically it. There were a few provincial run private clinics up here up until 03 when the Liberals got elected, they shut them down. We don't have the right to chose.

That's not what I meant. No healthcare jobs in Canada are government jobs unless they are tied to the military bases. There are private companies that receive payment from the government when billing for a service.
