Arizona Fall League preliminary rosters announced, the Cubs as usual host the Mesa Solar Sox at HoHoKam, and have had them as their affiliate as long as I can remember.

Affiliated with Mesa this year: Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles (NL). Cubs usually remain with them, others rotate by year.

Cubs on the roster:
Javier Baez (A+)
Dae-Eun Rhee (AA)
Kevin Rhoderick (AA)
Zach Rosscup (AA)
Rubi Silva (AA)
Nick Strunk (AA)
Matt Szczur (AA)
Tony Zych (AA)

Interesting to note that Silva was listed as an infielder.

Other interesting prospects with the Solar Sox.
Nick Castellanos - Detroit
Jarred Cosart - Houston
Jonathan Singleton - Houston
Yasiel Puig - Los Angeles (NL)

Other leagues Cubs prospects could participate in (teams are not affiliated, so any in the league):
Australian Baseball League
Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League
Mexican Pacific League
Robert Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico)
Venezuelan Professional Baseball League

Not on the Cubs’ list of players headed to the AFL is outfielder Jorge Soler, who has been impressive since joining the organization this summer. The Cuba native has batted .305 over his first 15 games at Single-A Peoria, following a short stint with Mesa in the Arizona Rookie League.

Not only do the Cubs want Soler to take it slow rather than play in the AFL, he will not play winter ball either.

“Jorge just hasn't played much baseball,” new farm director Brandon Hyde said. “He was in Arizona getting in shape and we're excited about the start he's had in Peoria. He just hasn't played much. We'd like to get him to instructional league and to get him five weeks to continue get his legs underneath him and just get into playing shape. He was just short on experience this last year and so we're excited about getting down there and getting with him every day. He's a special talent.”

September call-ups are on Saturday so I unstuck the old minors thread and we'll start using this instead. Both threads will stay open though.

I don't like that. I think he should be playing in either the AFL or in the DR winter leagues.

I'm guessing the front office and player development people have a method to their madness here. Not sure what that method is though.

From other thread:

Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat
Tony Campana, Dave Sappelt and Adrian Cardenas to join #Cubs on Sat. Also to be called up Rusin, who will start Tue

Bruce Miles ‏@BruceMiles2112
Cubs also to recall Socolovich, Rusin, Recker and Dolis over coming days

Iowa's season is over due to the hurricane. Daytona probably might as well be over since they've been rained out for like the past month.

If you look through the list of guys who made it to the AFL, it is pretty clear what the plan is. Just about everyone of those guys except for Szczur and Baez are guys that are rule 5 eligible this offseason. It seems pretty clear these guys are on the bubble and are seeing who they have to protect with very few spots left open. They can only send so many guys to AFL, and I am guessing Szczur and Baez got the call over Soler due to being farther along in development.

Apparently Hayden Simpson still sucks:

http://muskat.mlblogs.com/2012/09/07/97-boise-loses-1st-game-vs-vancouver/

Balbino Fuenmayor hit a go-ahead two-run single in a seven-run seventh inning to lift Vancouver to a 10-7 victory over Boise in the Game 1 of the Northwest League championship series on Thursday night. Vancouver sent 11 batters to the plate in the seventh. Marco Hernandez had three hits, Daniel Vogelbach drove in three runs, and Jeimer Candelario hit a single and double for the Hawks. Hayden Simpson took the loss, giving up three runs on two walks. He was unable to retire a batter. Game 2 of the best of three series will be played in Boise on Saturday, with Pierce Johnson slated to start.

Forgot if this was posted, but a bunch of coaches were fired:

http://muskat.mlblogs.com/2012/09/08/98-cubs-dismiss-6-minor-league-staff/

The Cubs have dismissed six members of the Minor League coaching staff. Dave Bialas, who has been with the Cubs for 18 years, most recently as Triple-A Iowa’s manager, was on the list along with Class A Daytona pitching coach Marty Mason, Class A Peoria manager Casey Kopitzke and hitting coach Barbaro Garbey, and Mesa Rookie League pitching coach Frank Castillo and hitting coach Jason Dubois. Kopitzke, Castillo and Dubois all played for the Cubs.
