I don't know about you, but I thought Frank Castillo would have made a good pitching coach since he always had to
"pitch" to get hitters out. Kind of curious if you had a similar inkling that Germano might make a good coach when he decides to hang it up.
I kind of liked Castillo when he was a Cub. He was always in a tough position it seemed. He had to take up a stronger spot in the rotation than he was capable of. I was kind of surprised to find out that he was the pitching coach way down low in the system a couple of years ago, but I liked the idea. Not so keen on Dubois, though.
As for Germano, he did pal around with Maddux a lot during his callup in 2007 with Maddux. Claims to have learned a lot. He's pretty good at leaving guys on base, and usually OK in pitching in tight situations. He's also that kind of guy who has to earn everything he gets with his ability to pitch rather than throw. The only thing I would question would be his ability to work with mechanics issues... or with guys who had a different throwing style than his own. I suppose that's stuff you could learn by watching other pitching coaches work.
