It's even worse at a drive thru. Wait too long in a Starbucks drive thru, get to the window and pay too much for black coffee, and they have a fucking tip jar on the counter outside the window.

Seriously? You literally handed me my order.

I got $ 2.10 an hour when I worked fast food and now your $9.00 isn't enough? I have to TIP you to hand me a cup???

Yeah, sometimes it gets under my skin. And admittedly, the chain involved and prices charged affect my attitude on tipping. Which is probably wrong.

When I am seated getting full service, I tip well. And never resent it.

I have heard some good points on both sides of this discussion.

I don't want to leave zero, but it puts the customer in an awkward spot.

When we go full serve - when the wait person takes our drink order, brings drinks, takes the food order....makes several trips to the table, including refilling drinks - they get 20%, right?

So when I stand in line at Panera, fill my own drink, including refills, if any, and they only drop the food off one time....what % seems fair?

When I pay, the suggested tips show up as $ amounts at Panera, but as % at other places. Panera, I leave what feels like a measly 50 cents, yet I am tipping them 50 cents for bringing my food out one time, and that is it.

At a local sandwich shop, similar to the setup at Subway, one stands in line to order, and gets zero service. They make the food. They hand it to you with an empty cup. Go sit down. Get your own drink. Clear your own table. And when you pay, not only will our system show suggested tips, but they will start at 18% and go UP.

My first reaction is "**** that!", but I don't want to feel cheap, and I tip 15% or 18%, and that is ridiculous.

When your're at a check out at a grocery store and the cashier ask you if you want to donate a dollar for some charity do you give ? I hate that when they ask me , times i will donate and times i wont but i feel pressured to donate when they ask. My wife who was a cashier once at a grocery store hated to ask the customers if they would like to donate a dollar or so . Management told them to ask the customers and then the wife would say management would never ask the customer when they had to run the cashier station .

She asked if we were ready to order, and we were not. She then said "Can you order anyway, I just had another table come in."

We found that very funny, and went ahead and ordered. No harm done.

My friend ordered a steak rare, and received it well done. Not the waitress' fault (unless she wrote it wrong. But we didn't blame her)

He sends it back (at my insistence - he knew of he did we'd be there longer and have to watch each other eat), and she exclaims "They'll have to cook you a-whole-nother steak!", as if this is HIS issue. He proceeds, and SHE is pissed at HIM!

The waitress completely ignores us after we do this, refusing to check and see if we need more beers, which we did. We had to literally STAND up at our table to get her attention. We ordered two more longnecks, which she brought and slammed down on the tile top table. :)

Steve eventually got his meal, finished it, and after I received the change, which included bills and one dime, we decided to leave the dime.

For ten cents, I got this story, which I have told a number of times.

I am a good tipper. I have a daughter who is currently waiting tables. I appreciate that servers are absolutely not the only factor in the equation regarding how quickly you get your food, etc. I am not hard to please at restaurants.

But, damn, that dime was money well spent!

Go back there when she's working and take Jim Johnson with you. He'll beat the shit out of her for you.

Want to run a scenario by you guys. I've been to a couple of places the past few weeks where you order at a counter and pay, then sit down and someone brings the food out to you. That's really it for the service. There was no waiter. But when you pay there is a spot to tip. Typically, I never give a tip to those places, but the past two times I've done that I was given a look. Not really a dirty look, just like a 'wow okay dick'.

Would you guys tip at a place like that? They aren't really doing anything to earn a tip besides taking my order.

I tip everyone. kind of off subject, but I tip bus girls and bus boys. They deserve it.

Is leaving no tip a bad tip? I done that.

No tip leaves open the possibility that you forgot, a coin sends an impossible to ignore message.

Perhaps. Was on family vacation many years ago when the kids were all still very young. went to the restaurant within the hotel. It was a buffet so you get your own food and stuff and the waiter gets you nothing but the drinks. I didn't like our waiter from the get go. Was kinda short with my kids so became an instant enemy in my eyes. Anyways, make a long story short, comes time to pay and I give the bastard my credit card. Didn't put the tip on it cause was just gonna leave a $10 bill or some shit. He was gone for about 30 minutes with it and I was incensed. Didn't watch where he went and couldn't see where he was but sensed he was up to no good. The kids went close by to play some games while we waited for this prick to return so I anxiously awaited the opportunity to give him hell. Then my wife's with all that "don't embarrass me" stuff and don't start trouble...they're just busy.. yada yada. So, for her benefit, I don't go off. Jackass finally comes back and gives me my card. The wife and I walk out but I had to go back cause I forgot something on the table. He's there, I'm guessing, looking for a tip cause he wasn't clearing off the table. I grab what I went back for and said, "no tip, **** you" and left it at that.

We were busy the rest of the day with the kids and what not and went home that night and I remembered to check my cc charges the following morning cause I knew there was a good reason he kept my card so long. Turned out he charged over $800 on it for cutlery, pots, dishes, all kinds of kitchen equipment. Called up my CC company and told them how it all went down with this guy and how long he was gone with my card. They were good about it and took the charge right off. I just hoped that guy got in so much trouble.

Only done it 2 times. And like others here, it's not for slow or bad service where they could be busy, shorthanded, have lousy food, or just have general incompetence. It's for intentionally rude behavior.

One time, the guy asked us if we were ready and when I said "give us a few minutes" as he turned around he and mumbled fucking idiot under his breath. I forget what I left him, it wasn't a lot.

The other time, the guy was just extremely short and cold to the point where all of us at the table were like WTF. It was a split bill and we all left like 5-10%

Another time though, I legitimately forgot to give a tip and as I was walking out the door, the lady came to me and asked if I thought the service was bad. I was really embarrassed and gave like 25% I hope I never have done that again where no one said anything. Really don't know how I forgot.

I have never left a bad tip but I have no problem career counseling bad servers. I point out what behaviors put me off my soup and personally hand them their tip. I worked in the industry and someone did that to me once so it became something I practice. Leaving a chit tip with no feedback is passive aggressive imo. I rarely get bad service tho probably because I'm pretty gregarious with servers, having worked as one myself.

If u know how 2 talk 2 people it's not hard to get a server on your side. You simply tell them, "look, you take care of me, I'll take care of u". The first time u may get a little something like a free shot or a beer top off... but, if you make it a habit to visit the same server every time you can really strike gold.

Let me tell you a couple of my corporate establishment scams:

Yeah i know i dont have you're high standards. Silly me feeding my kids at subway.

that's not what i was saying at all doofus, I was saying it's kinda funny to be letting a subway sandwich artist know you are going to take good care of them if they really go above and beyond to load your sandwich up and toast it extra nice
