Delivery drivers get 5 bucks from me. That is my standard. Of course I delivered Pizza when I was young and it made your night when someone tipped you well.

I will tell you this though. There was a time when we ordered delivery from a pizza joint that was close by frequently and once they realized they were getting five bucks for driving around the corner our pizza was always there fast, hot, and the order was always perfect. I have since stopped eating pizza entirely except on cheat occasions, so when I do I avoid all of the fast food pizza places as there are better options even though I may have to pick it up or go sit down for it.

There you go. A driver has multiple orders, who will they stop off at first?

So for the customer, many think that a delivery charge is the driver's. It's not, that's the discount you don't get by having it delivered.
Driver's cost to deliver in their vehicle to your home is $1.16 per mile. That's the break even point in 2019 per the IRS. The worst is when folks are so nice, invite you in out of the weather, tell you thanks so much for being out and about and tell you to keep the change only to see that it's 23 cents. Those are the times you'd rather just have nothing. And it happens a lot.

But my hats off to ya. As drivers if we got $5 for each delivery no more, no less that would be phenomenal.
Funny thing, the junkier the property, the better tipper they are. And it's not even close. I'd rather deliver $30 to a run down home then $75 order for a million dollar property. On average the poor tip 50-100% better than the rich.

Kind of an existential question. I mean is there really such a thing as a bad tip? Something is always better than nothing, true?

I suppose the worst tip I ever left was this place I dined and dashed at more often than Karma should have allowed. That is like a negative tip.

There is absolutely such a thing if you are in a full service restaurant.

Tips are the servers' pay.

Saying "something is better than nothing" would be similar to telling a worker they will get $12/hour, and then paying them $9/hr and suggesting it is "better than nothing".

There is an implied agreement that if we dine in full service restaurants, that the menu price is not our ultimate cost, and 15-20% minimum should be added, barring some anomaly.

Tipping at every other location being discussed here is far less clear, thus the discussion. But in no way should we feel that as long as we leave something more than zero at a fll serve restaurant we gave someone a "gift". That is simply not the case.

Interesting to see that telling the driver to keep the change is an insult. I can certainly see where it would be if that is considered a tip. With a driver, who should be getting a tip, gets only that, then it is a no brainer. Either the customer was not thinking at all of a tip and simply doesn't want the hassle of the driver digging out the change, or they feel 23 cents is fair. Not good.

In other cases, I know if I don't wait for a penny or two back at the drive thru, I certainly don't mean it as a tip. I simply think it makes no sense to sit and wait for a friggin' penny. And it's a non-tipping situation, so I don't think it's misconstrued. At least I hope not.

But as mentioned earlier, some of these places are now so brazen in asking for tips that shouldn't be expected, I will be sure to not leave the 23 cents change just for that reason. I do not owe a Starbucks employe a dollar for handing me one cup of coffee thru the window. For shit's sake, THAT's the job!

As far as delivery food, and we order more than we should, if done electronically we tip when we place the order. About 20% in most cases, just like a waiter. If done over the phone, we throw in a few bucks depending on the cost. I am not sure I have ever tipped at a drive though like Starbucks. Tipping is a bit out of control in some stores.

I wish more restaurants would just raise their prices, provide a decent wage to the staff, and include service. High end restaurants have been doing this for years. I am not sure how this would translate to casual sit-down places who are in a very price competitive market. Danny Meyer’s places in NYC include service and I like the option. You can’t even tip the coat check so you don’t feel nickeled and dimed.

The penny is absolutely stupid....literally costs more to make it than it is worth. The US literally loses money minting the penny

Some people are paid with the assumption they will be getting tips, some servers used to get paid less than minimum wage, I have no idea if that is still the case. I know delivery drives don't make shit in salary, same thing with most casino dealers, those casino dealers live on there tips.

I many (most) areas/states serves can be paid less than minimum wage. I think it is complicated from state to state. So, yes, servers can be paid very little. I don’t know what happens in areas that require a living wage.

Yes, it is still the case. If they get tips, their wage is much lower than whatever the minimum wage is.

I wouldn't call that a bad tip. It's not great, but anywhere between 10%-20% is pretty much the norm.

10% is not close to "the norm".

If leaving a tip, 15% is minimum.

Yeah, guess you're right. For the record, I'm a 20% guy most of the time.

Edit: I'm really glad I found that link. I was in Vegas recently and honestly had no idea how much to give a washroom attendant.

Unless the attendant did something very special or you went off and soaked yourself with his cologne collection, 1 or 2 bucks.

If I'm killing it at the tables, everybody wins.

Is leaving no tip a bad tip? I done that.

No tip leaves open the possibility that you forgot, a coin sends an impossible to ignore message.

What? No, no perhaps about it. No tip, the server walks away thinking that maybe you are an idiot that forgot to leave a tip, message not sent, you failed. A single coin is a crystal clear message, "I remembered your tip, and it is shit, just like your service".

Just to reiterate...

I left the single coin one time due to rude behavior.

I would never leave a single dime for slow service or for the cook messing up. (I also am not one of those nuts who eats at the same place every Friday night and then runs to social media to post "never again!" due to one subpar experience.)

I have had servers and other restaurant peopele tell me that a very small tip is more insulting than a zero. Zero they figure you forgot or you are just one of those assholes who never tip anyway. A tiny tip says, “I remembered and the service sucked”.
