Re: Hawks' Offseason Transactions
It means instead of doing it during the regular season they can do it now. Claiming the back money's. I believe.

That's why none of the Hawks were put on LTIR during the season. They were preparing for this.

If I understand it correctly. That's also why I said the total Cap numbers everyone had were skewed and that the NORMAL bonus's were figured in from the start.

The ONLY bonus that hurt the Hawks was the Con Smythe 1.3 mil.
Does LTIR take the injured player's salary off the books?

anyone else who can confirm? is this true? if so, it's brilliant.
That does not appear to be the case-1) The cap does not get reduced by the injured player's salary. The team can go over the cap by the replacement player. So the salaries for Hossa and Bolland are not deducted while injured, and 2) Looks like the team taking the exemption must get approval before the fact.

Bona-Fide Long-TermInjury/Illness Exception to the Upper Limit. In

the event that a Player on a Club becomes unfit to play (i.e., is injured, ill or disabled and

unable to perform his duties as a hockey Player) such that the Club's physician believes,

in his or her opinion, that the Player, owing to either an injury or an illness, will be unfit

to play for at least (i) twenty-four (24) calendar days and (ii) ten (10) NHL Regular

Season games, and such Club desires to replace such Player, the Club may add an

additional Player or Players to its Active Roster, and the replacement Player Salary and

Bonuses of such additional Player(s) may increase the Club's Averaged Club Salary to an

amount up to and exceeding the Upper Limit
, solely as, and to the extent and for the

duration, set forth below. If, however, the League wishes to challenge the determination

of a Club physician that a Player is unfit to play for purposes of the Bona-Fide Long-

Term Injury/Illness Exception, the League and the NHLPA shall promptly confer and

jointly select a neutral physician, who shall review the Club physician's determination

regarding the Player's fitness to play.

(i) A Club seeking to exercise the Bona-Fide Long-Term

Injury/Illness Exception must simultaneously so notify Central

Registry and the NHLPA, in writing, before any Player replacing

an unfit-to-play Player shall be permitted to play with the Club

I'm also not quite sure how it completely works either as you can tell from the post above..

if you take

Campbell, Toews, Kane, Hossa, Keith, Seabrook, Sharp, Bolland, Brouwer, Kopecky, Steeg, Crawford and Beach you are roughly about 49.5 Mil in current Cap hit. That's 13 players under contract.

with the Hawks "supposed" Cap sitting around 58.5 MIL you need to sign 9 more players with roughly 9 mil right now. I just don't see how you could keep Versteeg and Ladd at this point, but as I said there is something the Organization knows that the public does not IF they say they are done with trades. Unless Ladd is the casualty and not Versteeg.

The next 4 days before July 1st will be interesting. They do not want to lose anyone who's RFA for nothing if they aren't qualified before July 1st. Where as they could trade their rights now for something.

I think it's right. Not sure where to find the wording but I remember that being the reason they were not put on LTIE last year. There were several discussions on it.

It allows you to go over the Cap until that player returns to the ice. Once that player is returned you must then be back under the cap.

I also think a penalty comes with it Cap wise but am not a good enough CBA guru to find it. Which is exactly why they didn't do it for any of the players. If not they would have been IDIOTS not to get LTIE for Hossa he missed 1/3rd of the season.

Re: Hawks' Offseason Transactions

It's possible that an LTIE can be applied to Johnsson and the salary of a player deemed to have replaced him...

(vi) A Club may elect to replace a Player who is unfit to play under this

Bona-Fide Long-Term Injury Exception at any point during the

period that he is unfit to play
, and any days and games already

missed by the Player as a result of his being unfit to play (i.e., the

injury/illness causing him to miss more than twenty-four (24)

calendar days and ten (10) NHL Regular Season games) prior to

the election of the Bona-Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception

shall retroactively count toward the missed twenty-four (24)

calendar days and ten (10) NHL Regular Season games for the

Player. If a Club exercises this Bona-Fide Long-Term

Injury/Illness Exception, the unfit-to-play Player that the Club

replaces shall be placed on the Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception

List, and is required to remain on such list until twenty-four (24)

calendar days and ten (10) NHL Regular Season games have

elapsed from such Club's schedule –measured from the later of the

date of the Player's becoming unfit to play or the Player's last game

played –even in the event that the Player once again becomes fit to

play earlier than anticipated, and prior to the elapsing of twentyfour

(24) calendar days and ten (10) NHL Regular Season games;

This could be the kicker- the Hawks did not exceed the cap until after the season ended. When bonus money was earned. The replacement players used for Hossa, Bolland, Campbell, and Johnsson never put the Hawks over the cap. No need for a LTIE.

Perhaps Bowman got a ruling from the league well in advance of needing to use it retroactively. Ah ****, who knows.

Re: Hawks' Offseason Transactions

See thats where I get fuzzy. I was specifically told ALL Bonuses were figured into the Cap before the season started OTHER than the Con Smythe. So they did NOT go over due to the bonuses as they were figured in.

I agree only one entity knows for sure, The Hawks.

Re: Hawks' Offseason Transactions

The thing I learned from last years mess was teams have to figure their cap situation out on a day to day basis, not yearly as I had thought. That's why there were times when a team would bring up a player from the AHL and you would say to yourself, "why the **** him? so and so is way better." It came down that for 1 game the cap hit from one guy was so much less than another it made cap sense to bring up the lower paid player. Very interesting to follow.

Yeah that is a little low. Maybe Ladd will give them a hometown discount. I would love for him to stay on the Hawks.

Re: Hawks' Offseason Transactions

That's just the qualifying offer to retain his rights and mean very little to any actual contract he might sign.

That seems like a low ball offer. Ladd is worth more than that.
The offer is low because that is all the Hawks can afford to pay him.

You can't offer Ladd 3 mil if you only have 2 mil in cap space available.

This isnt the federal government where you can print fake money over and over and over and over................................

Re: Hawks' Offseason Transactions

Hawks have qualified both Hjarlmarsson and Niemi.

Now we'll see if they want to stay or go.

"Hawks' Hjalmarsson receives offer from team

Niklas Hjalmarsson, one of the Blackhawks' four restricted free agents, has received a qualifying offer from the team Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks have extended goalie Antti Niemi an offer in addition to the defenseman, (ChicagoBreakingSports)."

He might just take that to stay. Unfortunately they don't have a lot of money to go around. So now is when you see which is more important. Playing on a team with a LEGIT chance of winning the Cup (repeating) or going for the money. Eventually some of these guys with their name on the Cup will go for the money IMO. Not sure how that works with a group this tight though.
