I'd rather have him than just about any other announcer everywhere..

To me.. his voice is baseball.

If you look back at some of the huge moments that Scully called..

The way he describes each big turn of events which ended up being some of the biggest moments in MLB history is amazing..

His eloquence with words is just incredible.. There's a reason why he's still a broadcaster.

Or Uecker. It'd be fun to have Uecker and Scully do the World Series instead of the FOX fucknuts.

Harry Carey even sounded kind of blah to me. And I've only heard him in dvd footage. I am more keen to a Len and Bob or Steve Stone type I guess...

Baseball is for pussies that can't handle contact sports...and they charge too much for spectators to watch this team. That's really fucked-up. Hey, let's overcharge fans...only there aren't many fans left dumb enough to pay. Ah, but Cub fans are.

Last time I was at Wrigley, I wandered around and left in the 7th...

Par for the last 4 decades...lol

One more brief rant, stop clogging my home delivery sports page with fucking worthless baseball...we have hockey here in town Tribune.

I like baseball but it's way to slow. And I hate how everyone says its such a tough sport. Other sports are a lot tougher

Baseball isn't a true contact sport, but it takes a great amount of skill to A) put a round bat on a round ball and make it go a long distance the other way and B- throw a ball within a specified zone in such a way that it will miss bats. And they have to play almost every day for six months. That wears on the body. So it's not so much a sprint as a marathon, and you need a certain level of toughness to be able to play effectively through the bulk of 162 games, plus playoffs.

Meh, I was bitching b/c I pay for Trib and don't want baseball all over the sports page in Feb. I can understand the need for Spring etc, but neither team is going anywhere this year. Baseball is not easy, that's one game I have played. However, it is a sport many more people can excel at as opposed to basketball etc.

that's what I was trying to say. I know it isn't easy, but a lot less people have the ability to play other sports. Huge slow guys can't play basketball, but they can play 1st base or DH in baseball. You don't have to have great conditioning running wise.

The skillset is simplified in your statements. Not every person can recognize a slider or a changeup and still crank it 400 feet the other way.

While I have been hesistant to weigh this thread down with this discussion, I couldn't resist to chime in on the discussion of the skill and ability for people to excel in baseball. I think the discussion to this point has missed the difference between skill and athletic ability. There is a connection between the two, but there is a reason why baseball players often take longer to develop than any of the other professional sports. So while basketball requires more pure athletic ability there is a reason why many elite basketball players are successful at ages 19 and up whereas in baseball those players are generally hall of famers.

As a former baseball player, I take great offense to that. It is extremely difficult to hit a baseball traveling at speeds of 90MPH and above with a bat. Not only hitting it, but driving it over 300 feet or more. I take great pride in the fact that I was able to do that and excel at it as well. It takes a great amount of skill and coordination to do that, which not many people possess.
