Re: Hjalmarsson Hit Discussion

Ryan Miller's thoughts...

Sorry, I know he is your teammate but nothing about that hit warrants a "long term" suspension.

Tribune News Services

Sabres goalie Ryan Miller is urging the NHL to "wake up" and severely punish Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson for his blind-side hit that knocked out Buffalo forward Jason Pominville.

Miller says a long-term suspension to Hjalmarsson would be a significant step if the league wants to show it's serious in outlawing such hits.

Miller spoke Tuesday, a day after Pominville sustained a concussion and was taken off the ice on a stretcher. Pominville was crunched face-first into the boards in the first period of Buffalo's 4-3 loss. He is out indefinitely.

Hjalmarsson drew a 5-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct. The NHL is expected to review the play to determine if there will be a suspension.

futhermore... a long term suspension would do nothing to eliminate "these kind" of hits from the game. Doyou want hockey without hitting? Because that's what you will get. This was a hockey play and BOTH players were careless.

"That kind of hit" wasn't a dirty one, not like a typical Cooke hit. Those are the examples where you hit the guy with a long term suspension. Because, in the end, that will be the only thing that curbs it at all. Taking money away from the players. Fighting isn't going to stop it.

Wow I just lost a ton of respect for Ryan Miller. Appears he's got his tampon to tight from being schooled by Hossa twice last night. Yikes.

The quote:

The Sabres host New Jersey on Wednesday, beginning a stretch of

three games in four nights that ends in Chicago. Sabres agitator Patrick

Kaleta was quick to note that the two teams will meet again this

weekend.

"I think it'll get taken care of either with the league or, I think,

when we play them Saturday," he said. "We'll make a point that you

can't be taking hits like that against one of our leaders."

But hey, Scott is worthless and we don't need him out there protecting our guys, right?

God I hate Kaleta so much he's one of the biggest pussies in the league. I hope he gets pounded just for saying that since it wouldn't even be him "taking care of it" because he's a scared little *****.

even Sabre fans call him a little pussy. He's more of a pussy than Avery.

Can it still be a blindside hit if the players look right at each other and know it's about to happen?

It wasn't ruled a blind side hit, it was boarding.

I know. Miller called it a blindside hit. Might have not been a direct quote though.

Two games for Hammer

Not bad, and probably appropriate.

If I remember correctly we still have Hammer's cap hit against the salary cap for those two games?

I woudln't worry too much about that. All of the Sabres making very public comments was pretty stupid on their part and if they do anything penalties will be called quickly. You know the league will be watching that game closely, as they did the Penguins/Bruins game last year.

True. Plus the difference is that Cooke was NOT suspended aka did not receive "punishment". The fact that Hammer was suspended might actually help his cause.

Fact of the matter is the way pominville played that, had hammer hit more "flush" with pominvilles should, i.e. legal, he still would have been carted off the ice.

Just got my answer from capgeek

"According to our latest information, suspended players count toward the cap. Conflicting information has been published in the past."

While I think it should have been 1 game, this is somewhat of a statement from the NHL about any type of violent hit, especially one that causes injury. Now can the NHL stay consistent...

It's a fair suspension, I was expecting more but 2 games is nice.

Hammer is going to get challenged by the Sabres to a fight and MUST answer the bell. 5 minute fighting major is a lot better then having someone take runs at Kaner or Toews.
