Telling a hockey player he hit a guy too hard is akin to telling Peter North he came too much.

WTF!?[/quote]

I knew the answer, just always find it interesting that people believe that the player gets the whole salary sans income taxes. And yes 68k is a sizeable chunk to begin with, factor in the money lost to taxes and such and it become that much more. Not chump change in any means.

That's like a normal every day guy getting fined $1000. Not earth shattering, but substantial.

I was just putting it into perspective, for someone making like, $50,000 a year. As long as these guys aren't living beyond their means, and most hockey players DON'T, the lost pay from the two game suspension is negligible. Please keep in mind these guys are making MILLIONS, and really don't have huge living expenses... It's not even 2% of his salary.... and the team pays for pretty much everything.

huh? They have huge living expenses. They live differently than people who make 50k. The more money you make, the more expensive are your living expenses. Hell his penthouse condo was probably like 3 mil. And this is the first year of his "new" contract.

Is it going to make him poor, absolutely not. Is it something he won't think twice about, I doubt it. I'd be pretty pissed if I had to give 68k away.

And that condo is pretty much the only expense he has.... How often is he there during the year? What could his utilities possibly cost? He has no wife/kids to pay for... Most of these guys aren't driving around $300,000 cars... so his car payment isn't that much, if he even has one. His penthouse condo was like 3 mil, and he makes 3.5 mil per season.... How many people buy a house that costs less money than they make in a year? Not many. My point stands.

We're seriously arguing about how much a guy will miss $68k, when he gets paid MILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR, to play a game?

It's $37k.

His forfeited salary is based on the number of days in the season, not the number of games. Wisniewski's is based on the number of games because he's a repeat offender.

It won't kill him. Someday when you are older and owning property (or three) based on your salary (and all the bills, repair, maintenance, taxes that come with it), vehicles based with the same issues, medical, birthday, anniversary, holiday gifts, food, bills, agent fees, accounting fees, etc, you will understand that it is not chump change It is amazing how those all add up, and can consume 40-70% of income. On top of all that athlete's do not pocket their whole salary as written simply because of income taxes so one can never start at the salary point, have to shave a minimum of 37%-ish from it, but I know it is far more when you are in the top tax bracket.

Hammer is just starting that lavish contract. His pay does not come in a lump sum, either. Considering he purchased an expensive condo (what do you think the property taxes, never mind association and maint fees, would be on a $3 mil condo in an expensive neighborhood).

Only the smart ones.

And what I'm getting at is just because you could pull off a buying a home right at the top end of your budget doesn't mean you should. That's one of the reasons this country is in the middle of real estate/foreclosure crisis

How does it work, do they get american taxes taken out, homeland taxes, part of both? International waters taxes?

I think it also matters where they play. Pretty sure they pay an extra tax for every game they play in Canada. I think their permanent residence is probably where most of the tax money goes too. I'm sure each country has their own laws on how much tax you have to pay if you make money overseas.

It's all about the life style. And again it's not like he's been making 3.5 mil for years Pez, this is the first year of the contract and no way has that been paid out yet. They don't just get one lump sum check at the start of the year. When you are a millionare let me know how it works out. Until then you are guessing.

Frank explain how that works. I always thought it was per game no matter the previous offense?

I wish I could. I'm sure it's in the CBA and if I had time I'd go find it. All I know is that 4 or 5 reporters reported he'd lose 37k. Then I saw one of the national reporters say Wiz was out 79k because he's fined per game instead of based on season length because he's a repeat offender.

Edit: Found it. Article 18.3 of the cba

(b) For the purpose of calculating salary lost due to suspension, the following

formula will apply:

(i)for first offenders (first incident requiring supplementary discipline

in the form of a game suspension), Player to forfeit one (1) day's

Paragraph 1 NHL Salary and Bonuses, but not including

Performance Bonuses, for each Regular Season Game lost (1/total

number of days in the Regular Season measured from the date of

the League's first Regular Season Game to the last, irrespective of

the Player's team's schedule);

(ii) for repeat offenders (second or more incidents requiring game

suspension), Player to forfeit one (1) NHL Game's Paragraph 1

NHL Salary and Bonuses, but not including Performance Bonuses,

for each Regular Season Game lost (1/number of Regular Season

Games for each Regular Season Game suspended); and

(iii) Player Salary and Bonuses lost due to suspension will be

calculated based on a Player's Averaged Amount, as defined in

Article 50 of this Agreement.
